Consumer Alert: Rising Fees on Online Returns, Tips to Save Money

The post-holiday period often sees a spike in returns of unwanted gifts. Recent studies have revealed an astounding $627 billion in returned merchandise last year. This phenomenon has prompted many retailers to introduce additional fees for returns, particularly for online purchases. Retail experts explain that the cost of processing returns can be substantial, with $25 incurred per $100 of returned goods. Consequently, retailers are now recuperating these costs through return fees. For instance, H&M charges a $5.99 fee, J. Crew a $7.50 fee, and TJ Maxx an $11.99 shipping and handling fee on returns.

However, there's a way to circumvent these fees. Most stores have more lenient policies for in-store returns, often not requiring additional charges. Therefore, consumers are advised to return items directly to physical stores when possible, to avoid these extra costs.

Photo: Business Wire

Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition has voluntarily recalled select batches of Nutramigen Powder, an infant formula for managing Cows Milk Allergy, due to potential contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii.

The affected batches, distributed mainly in mid-2023, have a UPC Code of 300871239418 or 300871239456 and “Use By Date” of “1 Jan 2025”.

While this bacterium can cause serious health issues in infants, all tested products were negative for contamination, and no illnesses have been reported. The recall is limited to the U.S. and does not include Nutramigen liquid formulas or other Reckitt products. Most of the recalled formula is likely already consumed, as it was distributed through retail stores nationwide.
The batch codes affected are:
