Florida Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Lower Gun Purchase Age to 18
Representative Bobby Payne, a Republican from Florida, has reintroduced a bill to lower the firearm purchase age from 21 to 18. This follows a similar, previously supported bill in 2023. Representative Randy Fine supports the bill, stating that young adults should have the right to purchase guns. The bill aims to reverse part of the law passed after the 2018 Parkland shooting, where a 19-year-old killed 17 people.
Representative Anna Eskamani, a Democrat, opposes the bill, citing the Parkland shooting and recent mass shootings as reasons to maintain the current age limit. Eskamani emphasizes the dangers of young people purchasing firearms like AR-15s. Fine, however, believes the issue is rooted in mental health, referencing a recent Iowa school shooting by a 17-year-old. A Senate version of Payne's bill has yet to be filed.

Florida Lawmakers Push for Homeowner Rights in HOA Disputes with New Bills
State Representative Kristen Arrington, with support from Senators Linda Stewart and Victor Torres, has reintroduced two bills aimed at reforming homeowners' interactions with Homeowners' Associations. HB 59 requires HOAs to provide a one-time detailed notification of their rules to homeowners, ensuring clarity and transparency.
The second bill, HB 431, proposes reducing the maximum fine for HOA violations from $1,000 to $500, addressing concerns about the financial strain excessive fines can cause, especially for those on fixed incomes. This legislative effort is informed by past experiences, including a case during the COVID-19 pandemic where a senior citizen faced steep fines.
The lawmakers had previously attempted to abolish fines but faced backlash over enforcement issues. Arrington is now encouraging public feedback to support these bills, highlighting a community-focused approach to legislative reform.
What Happened To Millie’s North & 600 Degrees Pizza?

Amy and Chris Chibarro, owners of Millie's Restaurant and Catering, faced a year of mixed fortunes with the closure of two new ventures, Millie’s North and 600 Degrees Pizza, in Ormond Beach. Despite these setbacks, their original restaurant in Daytona Beach Shores continues to thrive.
Mr. Chibarro shared insights from their experiences, stressing the importance of sufficient capital, hands-on management, and careful trust in business relationships. He cited external factors like reduced tourism and increased costs as challenges in the restaurant industry.
The couple plans to focus on their successful Daytona Beach Shores location for the near future, introducing new menu items and rebuilding financially. Mr. Chibarro remains open to future expansion but prioritizes the stability and quality of their existing restaurant.
Misbranded Frozen Risotto Bites Pose Allergen Risk
Photo: USDA
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for frozen Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen, sesame. The alert was issued after a consumer complaint led to the discovery that packages labeled as mushroom risotto bites actually contained hot dogs in puff pastry, which include sesame.
Produced on April 11, 2023, these products were distributed to several states including Florida and are identifiable by specific packaging details including a lot code and establishment number “EST. 39896”. Although there have been no adverse reactions reported, the FSIS advises consumers to either throw away or return the product. The alert serves as a precautionary measure, especially for those with allergies to sesame.
UPDATE: More Contamination Found In Applesauce Pouches
UPDATE: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found high levels of chromium in addition to lead as previously reported in the WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree, part of the recently recalled cinnamon applesauce pouches.
This discovery comes amid reports from the CDC of 287 cases of lead poisoning across 37 states, primarily affecting children with a median age of 1, and at least one adult. The type of chromium detected is not yet identified, but the presence of chromium VI could pose additional health risks. The contamination was traced back to an Ecuadorian factory.
The FDA and CDC are advising consumers who have purchased these pouches, available under various brand names and sold at locations including Dollar Tree, to seek medical advice and discard the products due to the health risks associated with lead and potential chromium exposure.
