Golf Course Re-zoning On Planning Board Agenda Tonight

Tonight's (January 11) Ormond Beach Planning Board meeting is set for 6 p.m. at Tomoka Christian Church on Hand Ave. On the agenda will be the rezoning of the former Tomoka Oaks golf course, a 147-acre area. Developers Carl Velie, Ray Barshay, Sheldon Rubin, and Emily Rubin are seeking to rezone the property from Planned Residential Development to R-2 “Single-family low density,” permitting the construction of over 300 homes.

Preliminary plans for two new residential developments will also be reviewed. Fountain View is envisioned as a 137-lot subdivision, and Bradford Park, planned as a 180-lot townhouse subdivision. Both projects are located west of Plantation Oaks Boulevard and reflect the ongoing residential growth in the Ormond Beach area.

More Housing Development? Neighborhood Meeting Next Week to Discuss Tattersall at Tymber Creek

The Ormond Beach community is invited to a meeting on January 18 to discuss the Tattersall at Tymber Creek residential development. This follows the Ormond Beach City Commission's approval in October 2022 for the construction of 129 single-family homes by developer James Paytas. The development is planned for an 84-acre area at the northwest corner of Tymber Creek Road and Airport Road, a site with a history of development proposals.

The land, which includes Groover Branch wetland, has seen various development plans since 2006. Initial proposals ranged from a 68-lot subdivision to plans for 163 and 144 lots, all of which were denied due to concerns over density, traffic, and environmental impact. Paytas' earlier 143-home proposal in early 2022 was also rejected. The recent approval for 129 homes was influenced by the plan's lower density and significant land preservation.

MouthPad^ Emerges as a Game-Changer for Users with Disabilities at CES

Photo: Augmental

MouthPad^, a novel device introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show, offers a hands-free way to interact with smartphones using tongue movements. Designed by Augmental, the device resembles a retainer and sits on the roof of the mouth, allowing users to scroll, type, make calls, and play games. It was developed primarily for people with disabilities, especially those with hand impairments or paralysis, and connects to various devices via Bluetooth.

The inspiration for MouthPad^ came from the personal experiences of Augmental's team members, who saw the need for more effective and portable technology for individuals with paralysis. While there are other products in the market, like Tecla's switches and the Open Sesame app for head tracking, MouthPad^ offers a unique solution. It has also attracted interest from professionals in fields that require extensive use of hands and from astronauts for potential use in space.

After two years of development, focusing on refining controls and ensuring functionality in the presence of saliva or water, MouthPad^ is set to be released later this year, with early access currently available.
