Planning Board Unanimously Votes Against Tomoka Reserve Subdivision Rezoning

The Ormond Beach Planning Board has recommended against the rezoning of the former Tomoka Oaks golf course for the proposed Tomoka Reserve subdivision. In a meeting, the board unanimously voted against changing the zoning from Planned Residential Development to R-2 “Single-family low density." This follows the City Commission's rejection of a 272-home development plan on the site last year.

The property has been a subject of debate since its re-zoning in 2006. Board members, including Chair Doug Thomas, expressed skepticism about returning to the R-2 zoning, citing the need for development that aligns with current community needs and standards. The decision reflects ongoing discussions in Ormond Beach about land use, community development, and maintaining the area's character.

S.R. Perrott's Appeal Against Belvedere Terminal's Permit Raises Public Notice Questions

S.R. Perrott, an Ormond Beach company, has challenged an air pollution construction permit issued to Belvedere Terminals for a proposed fuel farm. The dispute, presented at an administrative hearing, revolves around concerns of inadequate public notice and environmental impact. S.R. Perrott argues that the public notice in the Hometown News was insufficient and the permit does not adequately address potential pollutant emissions.

During the hearing, Belvedere's attorneys attempted to demonstrate the adequacy of the public notice, while FDEP officials discussed the process of issuing air permits. Local resident Elena Krafft and other community members have expressed concerns about the project's impact on health and safety, leading to broader discussions about heavy industrial development in the area. Mayor Bill Partington has supported a moratorium on such development, highlighting the need to align growth with the county's current and future needs.

Innovative Microschools Offer New Horizons in K-12 Education

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, there's a growing concern about the academic lag in America's K-12 students, with many falling behind in basic skills. This has led parents to demand a more adaptable education system, resulting in increased school choice options across various states. Microschooling, a model offering personalized, small-scale learning environments, is gaining popularity among these options.

Organizations like the Vela Education Fund and the National Microschooling Center are highlighting the benefits of these alternative models. Examples like the Black Mothers Forum Microschools and the Prism Microschool illustrate the diversity and potential of microschooling. The upcoming National School Choice Week will showcase these and other nontraditional educational models.

Andrew Campanella, a prominent advocate for school choice, encourages parents and leaders to consider these innovative educational approaches, emphasizing their role in transforming education and impacting future generations.
