Ormond Beach Maintains MLK Day Legacy With Breakfast Event
The City of Ormond Beach continued its over thirty-year tradition of commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a special breakfast event. Held on January 15, this year's celebration adopted a "dine and dash" carry-out format at the Joe and Elwillie Daniels South Ormond Neighborhood Center. The breakfast menu featured a fulfilling selection of grits, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, and a biscuit. In addition to serving attendees at the center, the MLK Committee ensured that breakfast was delivered to those who could not be present, demonstrating the event's inclusive nature.
Tina Carlyle, the Chairperson of the MLK Committee, along with members Belinda Davis, Bobbie George, Veronica Jones, and Pastor George Ward, played pivotal roles in organizing this year's event. Despite the previous changes necessitated by the pandemic, the committee's efforts ensured that the community could still celebrate and honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Carlyle expressed hope that next year's event might return to its traditional format, which includes speakers and dance performances, signaling a return to normalcy and a deeper engagement with the community.
Community Warmth: Central Florida Rallies to Provide Shelter Amid Approaching Cold Front

Ormond Beach area residents are gearing up for a significant drop in temperatures, as a cold front is expected to sweep through the region. In preparation for the chilly weather, community organizations and local churches are collaborating to provide shelter and assistance to those in need.
In our area, Halifax Urban Ministries is playing a pivotal role in these efforts. The ministry is coordinating with various churches to ensure that adequate shelter is available for residents who may be adversely affected by the cold snap. This initiative reflects the community's commitment to supporting its members during challenging weather conditions.
Residents seeking transportation assistance or shelter during this period can reach out to Halifax Urban Ministries for guidance and support. The ministry is available at 386-317-5886, offering a direct line of help for those who may find themselves in need of a warm place to stay.
Mysterious Waxy Blobs Wash Up on Ormond Beach Shores
Photo: University of Florida
The Ormond Beach beaches recently witnessed an unusual phenomenon following a period of large waves in mid-December. Along with typical marine debris, there were mysterious blobs of white, waxy material. This substance, identified as paraffin wax, a byproduct of crude oil, is commonly used in various products like candles and beauty items. The wax is transported globally in cargo ships and tankers, often in a heated liquid state.
The cleaning process of these ships, known as "stripping," involves removing residual wax, which can sometimes be legally discharged at sea under specific conditions set by MARPOL Annex II. These regulations allow for the discharge of petroleum waxes, classified as moderate pollutants, at least 12 nautical miles from land, after certain procedures are followed.
The appearance of these waxy blobs on Ormond Beach is likely due to such legal discharges, possibly from ships not fully adhering to pre-wash regulations. While pinpointing the exact source is difficult, it's probable that the wax came from a distant location and was washed ashore by the recent storm. This incident is a rare occurrence in the United States, with few similar cases reported in the past.
