A.I. in Politics: A Push for Transparency in Campaign Ads

The Florida Senate is deliberating on a bill introduced by Senator Nick DiCeglie, which seeks to address the challenges posed by the use of generative artificial intelligence in political advertising. The bill, known as SB 850, requires political ads created with AI technology to include disclaimers indicating their artificial origin. The move comes amid concerns that such technology, which can generate realistic videos, audio, and text, might undermine the integrity of elections.

The bill has already passed the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee with a vote that split along party lines. Democrats, led by Senator Tina Polsky, have voiced apprehensions about the bill's shift from civil to criminal penalties for non-compliance. There is also uncertainty about who would bear the legal responsibility for violations – the creators of the ads, the candidates themselves, or their political committees.

Additionally, the bill proposes a mechanism for filing complaints about violations to the Florida Elections Commission, which would be tasked with conducting expedited hearings on these matters.

As the bill moves through the legislative stages, it faces questions about its exact implications and the scenarios it covers. Senator DiCeglie has acknowledged the need for further refinement to address these concerns. The bill's future, including its consideration by the full Senate, hinges on its ability to address these issues effectively. A similar measure is also being considered in the House.

Ormond Beach Advances Residential Expansion with Bradford Park and Fountain View Approvals

The Ormond Beach Planning Board has unanimously recommended the preliminary plats for two new subdivisions, Bradford Park and Fountain View phase 1B, in a recent meeting. Bradford Park, a townhome subdivision with 180 lots, will span about 25 acres and is located in an area that was rezoned from commercial to residential use last year. This development is intended to complement the existing Bradford Lakes subdivision within Plantation Oaks.

The pricing of the townhomes in Bradford Park, expected to be in the high $200,000s, sparked a discussion on the need for more affordable housing options. The board also expressed concerns about environmental impacts, particularly the monitoring of ecological studies for the presence of gopher tortoise burrows.

Fountain View phase 1B, part of the Plantation Oaks project, will consist of 137 single-family homes on nearly 78 acres. The construction of this phase is expected to take about 10 months. The approval of these projects indicates a significant expansion in Ormond Beach's residential landscape.
