Fatal Motorcycle Crash on State Road 40 Claims One Life, Under Investigation

A tragic traffic collision on State Road 40 in DeLeon Springs claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Friday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m. west of Lake Winona Rd. in the area of Volusia Speedway, involved a 2016 Ram 1500 truck and a 2018 Honda motorcycle.

Sources indicate that the truck, driven by a 60-year-old man from DeLand, was heading westbound on State Road 40 when it attempted to pass other traffic. In doing so, it moved into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The resulting collision was severe, with the front of the truck impacting the motorcycle.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to AdventHealth Hospital. Tragically, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of both drivers have not been disclosed.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers, who described the crash details as preliminary, have launched a traffic homicide investigation. The crash, which caused both lanes of State Road 40 to be blocked as reported around 6 p.m., remains a focus of ongoing inquiries.

UPDATE: FSIS Warns of Undeclared Sesame in Misbranded Mushroom Risotto Bites

UPDATE ON EARLIER STORY: The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued an updated public health alert concerning a mix-up in frozen food products that could pose a risk to consumers with specific food allergies. The alert focuses on a misbranding error involving frozen mushroom risotto products, which may mistakenly contain an entirely different item – hot dogs in puff pastry – that includes sesame, an undeclared allergen.

This alert, primarily aimed at protecting consumers allergic to sesame, was prompted by the discovery that packages labeled as "Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites" might actually contain the sesame-containing hot dogs. The FSIS decided against a recall since the product in question is no longer available for purchase.

The affected product, produced on April 11, 2023, is the 7.5-oz. package of "Wild Fork Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites" with lot code 101231, a "BEST BY DATE" of 10/11/2024, and establishment number “EST. 39896” on the box side. Notably, these packages do not bear the USDA mark of inspection. They were distributed to retail locations across several states, including Florida.

The issue came to light following a consumer complaint to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about finding the hot dog product in a mushroom risotto bites package. The FDA then alerted the FSIS, leading to this public health notification.
