Proposed Security Measures in Volusia Schools Spark Debate Ahead of Board Vote

Volusia County schools are considering an update to their Code of Student Conduct and Discipline, which includes a new policy for random searches during school hours, extending beyond the current practice limited to football games and after-school activities.

The proposed addition to the Code of Conduct is:

"Searches - All visitors to Volusia County School sites or events are on notice that searches may be conducted at random and without cause by the site administrator. Furthermore, the use of an electronic device may be utilized."

This change, aimed at enhancing school safety, applies to both students and visitors. While the sheriff's office will assist in implementing these measures, concerns have been raised about the impact on the school's environment and the legality of random searches without reasonable suspicion.

The policy will be voted on in the upcoming school board meeting on January 23rd.

New Florida Bills Target Safe Storage of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Florida is considering new legislation that would authorize the State Fire Marshal’s office to create rules for safely storing lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in various electronic devices and electric vehicles.

This initiative follows a News 6 investigation revealing the lack of state regulations, which increases fire risks. The bills (HB989 and SB1098) introduced in the Florida House and Senate aim to prevent fires by establishing guidelines for storage and charging of these batteries.

Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis highlighted the need for such regulations and the importance of public input, especially from battery manufacturers, in formulating these rules. The legislation is also a response to concerns about the unique dangers of lithium-ion battery fires and the need for specific firefighting tools and safety

Forever Chemicals PFAS in Spotlight as CDC Recommends Blood Tests

Are our modern conveniences slowly killing us?

The CDC is recommending blood tests for PFAS, toxic chemicals found in many everyday products, due to their link to various health issues. Over 98% of Americans have PFAS in their blood, which are found in the environment and consumer products. The tests aim to study trends in communities, as PFAS dangers are cumulative. PFAS, particularly PFOA and PFOS, have been phased out due to environmental and health concerns, but exposure still occurs through contaminated food, water, and products. The EPA has declared any detectable levels of PFAS unsafe, and there are no treatments to reduce them in the body. In Florida, PFAS have been found in many water systems, leading to testing and lawsuits. The CDC advises reducing PFAS exposure by avoiding certain products and using home filtration systems.

Authentic Texas Flavors Arrive at Ormond-by-the-Sea with Lottie Bell's BBQ

Ormond-by-the-Sea has welcomed a new culinary destination, Lottie Bell's BBQ, bringing the authentic flavors of Texas barbecue to the Florida coast. The restaurant, which opened its doors in early December 2023, is the brainchild of co-owners Brandell Campbell and Scotty Aycock.

The journey to Lottie Bell's BBQ began with a food truck launched by Campbell in 2020. Over time, the truck garnered a loyal local following, serving as a meeting point for community members and a place for forging lasting friendships. Among the regulars was Aycock, who shared Campbell's fervor for cooking and, more specifically, barbecue. Their bond, akin to brotherhood, laid the foundation for their joint venture.

The opportunity to establish Lottie Bell's BBQ emerged last summer when Campbell noticed the availability of a space formerly occupied by Salty Farms Seafood Market and Restaurant. For both Campbell, a Texas native with 35 years of barbecue experience, and Aycock, a Georgian who has barbecued most of his life, the venture marked a transition from hobby to profession.

Their commitment to authenticity extends to the use of mesquite wood sourced directly from Texas for smoking their meats, a choice that sets them apart in the local culinary scene. Lottie Bell's BBQ prides itself on its natural flavors, serving meats without sauce to ensure nothing is overpowered.

The restaurant's name is a tribute to Campbell's grandmother, Lottie Bell, a woman of Blackfoot Native American descent, known for her hospitality and insistence that no one left her house hungry. Campbell's granddaughter also carries the name Lottie Bell, continuing the family legacy.

Lottie Bell's BBQ, with its commitment to a homely and peaceful dining experience, is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering a range of smoked meats including brisket, ribs, and pulled pork.

Lottie Bell’s BBQ is located at 1452 Ocean Snore Blvd, Ormond-by-the-Sea, in the former Salty Farms Location. You can reach them at 386-301-5333 or “[email protected]”. Please mention Ormond Local Pulse when you call!!
