DAB Airport Joins Homeland Security's Initiative to Combat Human Trafficking

Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) has joined forces with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a significant move to combat human trafficking. This collaboration is part of the Blue Lightning Initiative (BLI) program, aligning with National Human Trafficking Awareness month. The initiative underscores the airport's commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its passengers, which exceeds 700,000 annually.

According to sources, including Airport Director Karen Feaster, the partnership was formalized in November 2023. It involves comprehensive training for airport employees, airline staff, and other airport tenants. This training focuses on recognizing the signs of human trafficking and equips them with the necessary skills to report such incidents effectively.

The BLI program provides detailed guidance on the typical indicators of trafficking that aviation professionals might encounter. It also outlines the steps to take when reporting suspected cases of trafficking to law enforcement authorities promptly.

In addition to trained staff, passengers play a crucial role in this initiative. If they observe what they believe to be a trafficking situation, they are encouraged to report it to an airline representative, who will then alert security, or they can directly contact the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline at 1-888-373-7888, which operates 24/7 and offers assistance in over 170 languages.

Silent Read-In Protests Book Removals at Volusia County Schools

The Citizens for Truth and Justice in Education and the National Coalition Against Censorship Kids Right to Read Network conducted a silent read-in outside the Volusia County School Board building to protest the removal of books from Volusia County school libraries. Laurel Robinson, an Ormond Beach resident and spokesperson for CTJE, stressed the importance of addressing this issue, fearing it could lead to broader educational restrictions.

Christina Quinn of Central Floridians for Social Equality emphasized the significance of diverse representation in literature. The silent read-in aimed to highlight the value of complete books and the power of silent protest.

Jenifer Kelly, Chair of the Moms for Liberty Volusia Chapter, also spoke at the meeting, urging the board to revise its policy on media selection. According to the Florida Department of Education, 89 books were challenged in Volusia County Schools during the 2022-2023 school year, with two being removed.

Sheriff's Office Joins State Program to Improve Pedestrian, Bicycle Safety

Credit: Volusia County Sherrif’’s Office

Because Volusia County ranks in the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists, the Sheriff’s Office is participating in the Florida Department of Transportation’s High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) program aimed at educating everyone about traffic laws to improve safety on all roads.

“Whether you're on foot, behind the wheel, or on a bike, you have a responsibility to share the road safely,” said Sheriff Mike Chitwood, who is an avid bicyclist himself. “Understanding the rules of the road helps ensure we all arrive at our destination safely and makes our streets safer for everyone.”

Starting this month through May, our deputies will increase patrols in specific areas with a high occurrence of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes. Special attention will focus on increasing awareness of the dangerous behaviors that are contributing to serious and fatal injuries at these locations.

Deputies will look for drivers who speed, fail to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and school zones, make improper turns or signal violations, and use hand-held devices while driving.

Deputies also will watch for pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to motorists who have the right-of-way.

Bicyclists will be stopped for riding against traffic, riding at night without lights or not abiding by the same laws as motor vehicles. Deputies will issue warnings and citations when appropriate.

Please help us make our Volusia County roadways safer for everyone. Here are some tips:

WALKING QUICK TIPS:

  • Always use sidewalks and crosswalk

  • Be visible. Wear bright, reflective colors on your clothes, shoes, belt and wristband

  • If no sidewalks are present, walk on the shoulder a safe distance from the travel lane, facing oncoming vehicles

BIKING QUICK TIPS:

  • Ride in the same direction of traffic on the street

  • Be visible, especially at night. Always use a white front light and a red rear light and reflector

  • Obey all traffic signs signals and markings

The Chokrevski Family Needs Some Help

Photo: Facebook

“With an extremely heavy heart I reach out for your support. One of the best caring couples I know, my best friend Jen and Steve Chokrevski learned that Steve has stage 4 lung cancer. Steve, 47, is the owner of Mr. Pipes in Ormond Beach, FL, father to 5 amazing kids (between 14 and 22) and loving husband to my best friend Jen. Because of Steve, his business has flourished on word of mouth and a long list of loyal customers.

Both Steve and Jen are the most loyal and selfless friends I know. They both have big hearts and their love for each other is what most of us dream of having. This family is the most appreciative family I know. I know the support from this will not only help them financially but really show them how much they are loved. It will also show them the impact they have had on others (including me) and it’s our turn to give back to their years of thinking of others before themselves.

Financially, this will help them pay their bills and medical expenses on their long journey ahead.” From Laura Hatcher

Authentic Texas Flavors Arrive at Ormond-by-the-Sea with Lottie Bell's BBQ

Ormond-by-the-Sea has welcomed a new culinary destination, Lottie Bell's BBQ, bringing the authentic flavors of Texas barbecue to the Florida coast. The restaurant, which opened its doors in early December 2023, is the brainchild of co-owners Brandell Campbell and Scotty Aycock.

The journey to Lottie Bell's BBQ began with a food truck launched by Campbell in 2020. Over time, the truck garnered a loyal local following, serving as a meeting point for community members and a place for forging lasting friendships. Among the regulars was Aycock, who shared Campbell's fervor for cooking and, more specifically, barbecue. Their bond, akin to brotherhood, laid the foundation for their joint venture.

The opportunity to establish Lottie Bell's BBQ emerged last summer when Campbell noticed the availability of a space formerly occupied by Salty Farms Seafood Market and Restaurant. For both Campbell, a Texas native with 35 years of barbecue experience, and Aycock, a Georgian who has barbecued most of his life, the venture marked a transition from hobby to profession.

Their commitment to authenticity extends to the use of mesquite wood sourced directly from Texas for smoking their meats, a choice that sets them apart in the local culinary scene. Lottie Bell's BBQ prides itself on its natural flavors, serving meats without sauce to ensure nothing is overpowered.

The restaurant's name is a tribute to Campbell's grandmother, Lottie Bell, a woman of Blackfoot Native American descent, known for her hospitality and insistence that no one left her house hungry. Campbell's granddaughter also carries the name Lottie Bell, continuing the family legacy.

Lottie Bell's BBQ, with its commitment to a homely and peaceful dining experience, is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering a range of smoked meats including brisket, ribs, and pulled pork.

Lottie Bell’s BBQ is located at 1452 Ocean Shore Blvd, Ormond-by-the-Sea, in the former Salty Farms Location. You can reach them at 386-301-5333 or “[email protected]”. Please mention Ormond Local Pulse when you call!!
