It Could Happen To You! A Warning from a Defrauded Central Florida Couple

A Central Florida couple lost $7,100 in a real estate scam after attempting to rent a home listed on Homes.com. The listing, for a property in East Orange County, was manipulated by scammers who posed as the realtor, Nicolas Barbara. Despite following the process, which included viewing the home and submitting a rental application, the couple wired money for rent and a security deposit to the fraudsters. Investigations revealed that the scam involved the use of a legitimate realtor's identity. The U.S. Secret Service advises potential renters to insist on in-person meetings and verify identities before making wire transfers.
