Pine Trail Students Shine in Coach Vollinger's Last Pioneer Mile

Coach James Vollinger, a beloved figure at Pine Trail Elementary, marked his retirement with the final Pioneer Mile race, an event he founded 30 years ago. This year, a record 121 students participated, with fifth-grader Maxwell Bosang nearly setting a new school record. The race, which demands rigorous qualifying times, highlighted the students' athletic talents and the strong sense of community Vollinger has nurtured. As he steps down, Vollinger leaves behind a legacy of determination and teamwork, qualities that Coach Christina Wingard believes will continue to inspire Pine Trail students for years to come.

Public Comment Invited On VSO's Compliance With Accreditation Standards

In a recent public news release, the VSO has solicited public comments on it’s performance as part of the department’s accreditation.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO) is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). In addition to CALEA’s Law Enforcement Accreditation program, VSO also participates in the Public Safety Communications and Public Safety Training Academy accreditation programs provided by CALEA.

CALEA has created a public portal designed to receive comments regarding VSO’s compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status.

These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

The Sheriff’s Office 911 Communications Center will also be undergoing an on-site CALEA assessment beginning March 25.

The public portal can be found here: https://cimrs2.calea.org/636. It’s also linked on the Volusia Sheriff’s Office website at: https://www.volusiasheriff.gov/resources/CALEA-accreditation.stml.

U.S. Congressional Leaders Unveil Spending Bills Amid Political Divides"

U.S. Congressional leaders have released a legislative package proposing full-year funding for several federal agencies, aiming to prevent a partial government shutdown. The package, worth about $460 billion, includes spending for agencies like Veterans Affairs and Agriculture. This move comes amid intense negotiations and political divisions, particularly within the House Republican caucus. House Speaker Mike Johnson highlighted conservative achievements in the package, while Democrats managed to block several Republican policy initiatives. The negotiations, which still include defense spending, must conclude before a March 22 deadline to avoid a shutdown.

Lawsuit against Seresto flea collars settled for $15 million

Elanco Animal Health has settled a class-action lawsuit for $15 million over its Seresto flea and tick collars, following claims that the product caused pet deaths and injuries. The lawsuit, supported by over 101,000 incident reports, including nearly 2,700 pet deaths, led to scrutiny by the EPA, which found most deaths unrelated to the product's intended chemical effects. Under the settlement, purchasers can claim up to $13 per collar, with additional compensation for documented pet deaths or injuries. Elanco, while not admitting fault, has agreed to enhanced safety reporting and labeling changes. Claims must be submitted by July 23, 2024. Submit a claim online or download a form to mail.
