Public Weighs In as Volusia County Reviews Future of Key Advisory Boards

The Volusia County Council is considering the elimination of four advisory boards: the Code Enforcement Board, Library Advisory Board, Animal Control Board, and the Business Incubator Advisory Board, as part of an effort to streamline its advisory system. This decision follows a unanimous vote to evaluate the necessity of these boards, amidst broader discussions on improving efficiency and engagement within the county's governance. Public response at the council meeting was significant, with many advocating for the preservation of advisory boards due to their importance in community representation and civic participation. While the future of these boards is yet to be determined, the council has committed to exploring alternatives and enhancements, particularly for the Cultural Arts Council and the Environmental and Natural Resource Advisory Committee, reflecting the community's vested interest in these areas.

The U.S. Postal Service is launching a "Save Manatees" postage stamp on March 27, Manatee Appreciation Day, to highlight the conservation needs of the threatened West Indian manatee. Designed by Nancy Stahl, the stamp aims to encourage public involvement in protecting these marine mammals from threats like habitat loss and boat strikes. The initiative coincides with a ceremony at Silver Springs State Park and comes amid concerns over high manatee mortality rates and discussions on potentially reclassifying the species as endangered.

“It has been proven many times that the government cannot be trusted to do anything well or within budget due to corruption of officials from city planning boards up to the office of President. An example is the Belvedere fuel dump debacle.”

“The government should stick to running the government which they can't even seem to do very well.”

Before the county takes on another project like a $10+ mil recreational motorcross venue. We need them to 1st build or enlarge schools for all the new students moving into our area. Fix or repave all the many pot holed roads that are horrible. Focus on areas here we already have that we need maintained for various public use, like public bathrooms, childrens parks. Parks are needing new equipment, cracked sidewalks. Cleaning up our city. ”

“Look at what Charlotte Motor Speedway has done with their motocross, and dirt track. ”
