Parental Support Grows for Proposed Student Screenings in Volusia County

Volusia County Schools is contemplating a new policy for random student screenings to enhance safety and deter prohibited items on campus. This initiative, discussed in a recent workshop, has evolved from initial skepticism to broader acceptance among parents. The policy aims for fairness by using a randomizer to select screening locations and times. Portable metal detectors, akin to those at theme parks, will facilitate the screenings. The proposal responds to an uptick in weapons incidents at schools, aiming to protect and prevent poor decision-making among students. Similar measures are in place in neighboring counties, with a final decision expected at the School Board's April meeting.

Local Man Faces Charges After Threatening Violence Against Daytona Beach Doctor

Shane Brian Wetherell, a 46-year-old man from Ormond Beach, has been arrested for threatening to kill his former doctor in Daytona Beach through various means, including voicemails, phone calls, and text messages. The threats, which implied physical harm and property damage, led to Wetherell being charged with making written and electronic threats to kill or do bodily harm. He is currently being held without bail in the Volusia County Branch Jail. The incidents have raised concerns about the safety of medical professionals.

Volusia County's 'Granite Gangster' Faces New Felonies in Home Repair Fraud Case

Charles D. Ogden, a 48-year-old businessman from Ormond Beach, known as the "Granite Gangster," has been rearrested on charges related to fraudulent business practices following the 2022 hurricane season. Facing three new felony charges, including an organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, and unlicensed contracting during a state of emergency, Ogden's arrest highlights ongoing issues with substandard and incomplete home repair work in Volusia County. The case gained traction after complaints from affected residents, including a Vietnam veteran who paid Ogden $60,000 for unsatisfactory home repairs. Investigations revealed a lack of necessary permits and involvement of unlicensed workers in Ogden's operations. Released on $75,000 bail, Ogden's case has prompted calls from other victims for further legal action against him and his business practices.

How Your Car Could Be Increasing Your Insurance Rates

A New York Times investigation has uncovered that insurance rates for some drivers are being influenced by data collected from their internet-connected vehicles without their explicit consent. Features like General Motors' OnStar Smart Driver, among others from various automakers, are monitoring driving behaviors such as speeding and hard braking, and sharing this data with third parties, including insurance companies. Kenn Dahl's experience highlights the issue, as he found his insurance premiums had increased due to data shared by LexisNexis, which had been collected from his Chevrolet Bolt. While automakers and data brokers claim that driver consent is obtained, the process is criticized for being hidden in fine print, leading to investigations by privacy regulators and concerns over potential legal violations.
