Ormond Beach Grapples with Waste Pro Over $560,000 Fee Dispute
Ormond Beach is currently navigating a complex dispute with Waste Pro of Florida over franchise fees, with over $560,000 at stake. The disagreement arose following a contract extension approved in early 2023, which included adjustments for inflation and unforeseen costs. Waste Pro contends it was underpaid due to a discrepancy in franchise fee calculations, claiming the city owes an additional $560,647.64. Despite differences, both parties have expressed a desire to resolve the matter, with the city highlighting the fees' importance for funding essential services. Mayor Bill Partington believes a miscommunication led to the dispute but remains hopeful for a resolution that maintains the city's positive relationship with Waste Pro.
Joann Fabrics Seeks Financial Reinvention with Chapter 11 Filing, Aiming for a Swift Turnaround
Joann, the esteemed crafting and fabric retailer, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware, aiming to restructure its financial obligations. The company has secured $132 million in new financing to help reduce its $1 billion debt by half. Despite this, Joann plans to expedite the bankruptcy process to emerge as a private company by as early as April 2024, ensuring its stores and online operations continue without disruption. The retailer, which was founded in 1943 and operates 850 stores nationwide, including 44 in Florida, and locally in Daytona Beach, Joann reassures stakeholders of its positive cash flow and commitment to quality service and product offerings.
Georgia Couple Arrested in Florida for Child Neglect After Being Found Intoxicated on Beach
A couple from Georgia, Timothy Stephens and Alyssia Langley, were arrested in Daytona Beach, Florida, for child neglect after being found intoxicated and asleep on the beach, with their children missing. The authorities were alerted by an anonymous call, leading to the discovery of the couple surrounded by empty alcohol containers but no sign of their 5-year-old and 7-year-old, who were later found swimming unsupervised. Sheriff Mike Chitwood criticized the couple's negligence. Stephens, who attempted to escape during questioning, faces additional charges, including possession of alcohol on the beach and attempting to escape custody. Both children were found safe.
