Bill Jones’ Latest Creation to Enhance Ormond Beach Skyline

Photo: City of Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach City Commissioners have approved a rooftop sculpture for the Art Spotlight gallery, adding to the city’s vibrant downtown. The 6-foot-tall, 17-foot-wide illuminated installation will spell “art” in marquee-style lights, aligning with efforts to enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal. Although classified as a sign, officials praised its artistic design and its potential to attract visitors. Building owner Bill Jones, known for bold design choices such as a metal pig sculpture at Pumphouse BBQ, aims to create visually distinctive landmarks that encourage exploration. City leaders acknowledged Jones’ role in transforming downtown from a neglected corridor into a thriving hub and expressed confidence in his vision. The sculpture is expected to debut later this year.

Elderly Daytona Beach Man Dies in Granada Boulevard Crash

An 81-year-old Daytona Beach man was killed in a collision with a teenage driver Thursday evening on Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 7:26 p.m. when the elderly man attempted to make a left turn near Shadow Crossings Boulevard, entering the path of a westbound pickup truck driven by a 16-year-old boy. The vehicles collided, causing both to overturn—one onto the westbound lane and the other onto the median. Emergency responders pronounced the elderly man dead at the scene, while the teenager was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are continuing their investigation, with initial reports indicating that the elderly driver failed to yield.

Volusia County Encourages AED Registration to Enhance Life-Saving Capabilities During Emergencies

AI Image

In recognition of National Heart Month this February, Volusia County is encouraging local businesses, organizations, and residents to enhance community safety by registering their Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) with the Emergency Medical Administration Division. When an AED is registered, emergency dispatchers can quickly pinpoint its location and direct 9-1-1 callers to it in an emergency. This crucial step ensures immediate access to life-saving equipment, bridging the gap until professional medical responders arrive.

AEDs play a vital role in saving lives during sudden cardiac arrest by analyzing heart rhythms and, if necessary, delivering an electrical shock to restore effective heart rhythm. Quick access and use of an AED dramatically increases survival chances, making the knowledge of their locations essential during emergencies.

"The registration of an AED empowers emergency dispatchers to make every second count by quickly directing the public to this essential resource during a cardiac crisis," said Emergency Medical Administration Director Mark Wolcott. "Each registered AED is a pivotal link in our community’s emergency response chain, enhancing the ability to provide immediate and potentially lifesaving assistance.”

Device holders should perform regular inspections to ensure their AEDs are operational and reliable when needed. Maintenance should include checking the functionality and expiration dates of batteries, ensuring the availability and condition of pediatric and adult pads, and maintaining a stock of cleaning wipes.

Registering an AED is a straightforward process accessible via an online submission form at Registration Form. For more information about registering an AED or to complete registration over the phone, call 386-248-8149.

Volusia County Streamlines ParkVolusia Permits With Online Portal and Appointments

Volusia County is modernizing its ParkVolusia vehicle registration program by promoting online applications and introducing an appointment system for in-person services. With nearly 80,000 permits issued—over 80% through the online portal—officials emphasize the convenience of the digital platform, which typically takes less than 10 minutes. Residents can visit www.parkvolusia.org for registration guides and FAQs. For those requiring in-person assistance, appointments will be available starting Monday, Feb. 24, at ParkVolusia offices in Daytona Beach Shores and New Smyrna Beach. Walk-ins are still accepted, though scheduling ahead by calling 386-217-0078 is recommended to avoid wait times. The initiative reflects broader trends in digital government services, aiming to enhance accessibility and reduce administrative delays.
