🐦 Found a Baby Bird? Here's What to Do
Spring is prime time for nesting, and it's not uncommon to spot a baby bird on the ground. The Marine Science Center's Kathryn Hellman offers advice: first, check whether the bird is a fledgling (feathered and learning to fly) or a nestling (unfeathered and not ready to leave the nest).
If the bird appears injured or weak, call for help. Otherwise, fledglings should be left alone if they’re in a safe place. Nestlings should be returned to their nest—or placed in a substitute if needed.

“It’s a myth that birds reject babies touched by humans,” Hellman notes. Let’s give them their best shot at life.

🏖️ Business on "World's Most Famous Beach" Ramp
After nearly a year of construction, the International Speedway Boulevard beach ramp in Daytona Beach has reopened. The $2.3 million upgrade enhances traffic flow, parking, and aesthetics—but not everyone’s thrilled.
Sam Tadros, owner of Sam’s Coal Fired Pizza, said his restaurant closed during the project and lost major revenue. He also expressed concern over new $20 parking fees.
Volusia County’s Clayton Jackson says the improvements are an investment in the future. Officials hope the area’s visual refresh and better access will eventually draw more beachgoers and benefit local businesses.
For Tadros, the verdict’s still out. "I haven’t seen more customers than before," he said. "It’s actually a disadvantage with the parking changes."

🐾 Brownie's Mutt Strut Raises $150K for Halifax Humane Society
With canine costumes, food trucks, and high-flying stunt dogs, Brownie’s Mutt Strut brought thousands to Daytona Beach’s Riverfront Esplanade—and raised $150,000 for the Halifax Humane Society.
Rescue dog Sport and his owner Sharon Miller were among the 1,000 attendees. Sport, once labeled "untrainable," now rolls over on command. "It was the people, not the dog," Miller said.
The event, renamed in honor of Brownie, a beloved town dog from the 1940s, now has a permanent home at the Riverfront Esplanade every first Saturday in May. Proceeds go toward food, shelter, and care for over 15,000 animals annually.
Adoption fees were waived thanks to sponsor support, and festivities included live DJs, a beer garden, and the crowd-favorite All-Star Stunt Dogs.
"This is a huge win for our animals," said HHS CEO Sean Hawkins.
