📱 Florida Legislature Approves Student Cell Phone Ban

Florida lawmakers have passed legislation barring students in elementary and middle schools from using cell phones during the school day. The ban extends "bell to bell," expanding on current restrictions that only prevent usage during instructional time.

For high schools, the bill maintains existing instructional-time restrictions but creates a pilot program in six counties—two small, two medium, and two large—that will test a full-day ban in high schools as well.

Some lawmakers raised concerns about students on field trips being unable to contact parents, but Representative Busatta countered, "Just like we did it when we were in school and we didn't have phones...parents were able to get a hold of us when they needed to."

The bill also includes provisions benefiting charter schools, including guaranteed shares of sales-tax money and removing the requirement for teacher approval when converting traditional public schools to charter schools.

🏃 Mainland's Kajuan Curry Qualifies for State Championships in Three Events

Mainland High School senior Kajuan Curry is heading to the state track championships after qualifying in three events at the Region 2-3A track meet. Despite the 800-meter run being his "third-favorite" event, Curry placed second with a time of 1:58.96, automatically qualifying for states.

Curry also anchored Mainland's 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams, both of which placed second and qualified for the state championships. The 4x800 team shattered the school record with a time of 8:05.04.

"I'm hard on KJ, but he ran his butt off today," said Bucs coach Terry Anthony. "It was a very grueling day."

Senior Amyah Watlington was Mainland's only regional champion, winning the girls 100-meter hurdles in 14.13 seconds, breaking her own school record of 14.31. Watlington heads to the state championships on May 9 with the seventh-best time in Class 3A.

🌀 Hurricane Preparedness Week Helps Residents Get Ready

Courtesy: NOAA

With the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season beginning June 1, the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service have designated May 4-10 as Hurricane Preparedness Week. The initiative aims to raise awareness about hurricane dangers and encourage early preparation.

Early forecasts predict an above-normal hurricane season for 2025, with Colorado State University ranking Florida No. 1 for the probability of a named storm coming within 50 miles at 92%. AccuWeather warns this could be a year with "volatile hurricanes" that may rapidly intensify shortly before making landfall.

The National Hurricane Center will begin issuing tropical outlooks on May 15, with their official season predictions coming later this month. Current forecasts suggest 13-21 named storms, 7-10 hurricanes, and 3-5 major hurricanes.

Today's preparedness focus: "Know your risks, wind and water" – identify if you live in a flood-prone area or evacuation zone and check for structural weaknesses in your home.

🏛 Florida Tech Researchers Study Roach Behavior and Psychology

Florida Tech researchers are giving cockroaches the respect they deserve. Associate Professor Darby Proctor runs the Roach Lab at Florida Institute of Technology, where she and her students explore roach behavior and psychology.

"Cockroaches are incredibly diverse and prevalent," says Proctor. "If the goal of science is to understand the world around us, cockroaches need to be explored to a greater extent than they are now."

The lab studies discoid roaches, native to the Caribbean, investigating questions like: Do roaches make friends? Is there cockroach courtship? How cognitively flexible are they? The research may provide insights into the origins of social behavior, with implications for understanding human psychology.

Proctor's research offers undergraduate students hands-on animal research experience without the ethical concerns of traditional labs that euthanize subjects. The roaches live comfortably in the lab, feasting on their favorite snack—Froot Loops cereal—and sometimes reproducing through parthenogenesis, where females clone themselves without males.
