🐶 Free Rabies Vaccines and Microchips for Pets May 12

Volusia County Animal Services is lending a paw to pet owners with a free event on Monday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at Chipper Jones Park in Pierson. Residents can bring their cats and dogs (sorry, no strays or community animals) to receive free rabies vaccinations and microchipping services. It's a simple way to protect both pets and people—and to help ensure lost animals find their way home. Services are first-come, first-served and proof of Volusia residency is required. For more info, contact 386-248-1790 or [email protected].

🗣️ District 4 Dialogue with Troy Kent on May 19

Want to have your voice heard? Volusia County Council Member Troy Kent is hosting a community meeting on Monday, May 19, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St. No reservation is needed—just show up and share your thoughts or questions. This open discussion is part of Kent’s ongoing effort to stay connected with residents of District 4, which includes Ormond Beach, Holly Hill, parts of Daytona Beach, and more.

🎺 Ormond Remembers “Uncle Fuzzy”: A Tribute to Walter Bailey

Walter Bailey, the beloved former band director at Ormond Beach Middle School, passed away at 83, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of dedication to music education. Known affectionately by students as “Uncle Fuzzy,” Bailey taught from 1966 to 1997 and remained active in community ensembles even after retirement. A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, May 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the OBMS gymnasium (151 Domicilio Ave.). His family invites donations to the OBMS Band Parents Association in lieu of flowers: tinyurl.com/OBMSBand1.

🌱 County Council Supports Voluntary Environmental Development Plan

The Volusia County Council has approved a voluntary Low Impact Development (LID) strategy aimed at reducing flooding and preserving the environment. While some council members pushed for stricter, mandatory standards, the final vote kept things flexible—offering incentives to developers who opt in. LID measures include stormwater-friendly designs and green infrastructure. As only 2 out of 67 counties in Florida currently mandate LID, Volusia is aiming for balance between progress and practicality. If the current approach doesn’t yield results, council members say they’re open to revisiting the policy.

⚖️ Dangerous Dogs Bill Heads to Governor’s Desk

Florida lawmakers have passed a unanimous bill aimed at protecting residents from dangerous dog attacks. Awaiting Gov. DeSantis’ signature, the law will require owners of dangerous dogs to carry $100,000 in liability insurance, implant a microchip, and securely confine the animal. The legislation follows several tragic incidents, including the 2025 death of 8-year-old Michael Millett in Volusia County. Residents like Nancy Cerniglia, who lost her dog in a 2022 attack, have voiced strong support for the measure. If signed, the law will take effect July 1.

Are You Leaving Money on the Table by Not Using AI?

While major corporations invest millions in artificial intelligence, most local businesses in our community are missing out on tools that could dramatically cut costs and boost productivity—simply because there's no clear roadmap for implementation.

As someone who's leveraged AI to revolutionize our newsletter operations, I've seen the difference: tasks that once consumed several hours now wrap up in minutes. Customer insights that once required expensive consultants now appear at the click of a button.

I'm exploring creating a community hub where local business owners and individuals alike can discover AI applications , access step-by-step guides, and connect with others who've successfully integrated these tools.

But first, I need to understand what's holding you back. Is it confusion about where to start? Concerns about cost? Questions about relevance to your specific industry?

Your 3-minute response to our survey will help build a resource that addresses your actual barriers—not theoretical ones. In return, survey participants will receive priority access when we launch and exclusive first-month content completely free. - George Sloane, Publisher, Ormond Local Pulse
