🎞️ MOAS to Host 44th Short Film Concert
Movie lovers, take note: the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach is rolling out the red carpet for the 44th edition of the Short Film Concert on Friday, May 16. Presented by Asbury Shorts, the event is known for its blend of critically acclaimed contemporary and classic short films. This marks the seventh year Asbury Shorts has partnered with MOAS, joining a prestigious list of venues from NYC’s Central Park to London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Screenings kick off at 7:00 PM in the Root Family Auditorium. Doors open at 6:00 PM for a cash bar and 6:30 PM for seating.
Tickets are $20 for museum members and $25 for non-members. You can grab yours by visiting the MOAS website or calling (386) 255-0285.

🛡️ What to Do in an Active Shooter Situation
A tragic incident at a Port Orange Walgreens this week—where a man shot two employees before taking his own life—has reignited an important question: what should you do during an active shooter event?
Experts at the FBI and Department of Homeland Security stick to a memorable guide: Run, Hide, Fight. First, evacuate if it’s safe. If not, find a secure spot to hide. And only if absolutely necessary, fight back using any available tools.
Preparation is key. Identify exits in every building you enter, stay aware of your surroundings, and consider attending safety or first aid training.
If law enforcement arrives, remain calm, keep your hands visible, and follow their instructions closely. Their first priority is to stop the threat, so help can follow.
While sobering, being informed and prepared can make all the difference.

🏗️ Ormond Beach Plots a Path Forward
Ormond Beach leaders have mapped out an ambitious vision for the city following a series of strategy workshops. The result? 28 goals and 39 priorities to improve everything from trail systems to water quality.
In transportation, the commission prioritized trail connectivity, especially linking Airport Road to conservation land and expanding Beach Street’s network. While not every commissioner ranked trails equally, there was consensus on updating the city’s aging trail master plan.
Economic goals include boosting high-wage jobs and expanding airport capabilities, such as extending the runway for safety and efficiency.
In governance, the city plans to continue its Citizens Academy, partner with local organizations, and update its website for better accessibility. They also discussed drafting “norms and procedures” for commissioner conduct.
Public safety goals include maintaining a strong police presence and considering the role of Narcan vending machines in overdose prevention—a topic that sparked debate over image vs. impact.
Quality of life initiatives center on public art, community center planning, and rehabilitating the Chief Tomokie statue. Environmental goals include stormwater upgrades, septic-to-sewer conversions, and expanding reclaimed water systems.

Are You Leaving Money on the Table by Not Using AI?
While major corporations invest millions in artificial intelligence, most local businesses in our community are missing out on tools that could dramatically cut costs and boost productivity—simply because there's no clear roadmap for implementation.
As someone who's leveraged AI to revolutionize our newsletter operations, I've seen the difference: tasks that once consumed several hours now wrap up in minutes. Customer insights that once required expensive consultants now appear at the click of a button.
I'm exploring creating a community hub where local business owners and individuals alike can discover AI applications , access step-by-step guides, and connect with others who've successfully integrated these tools.
But first, I need to understand what's holding you back. Is it confusion about where to start? Concerns about cost? Questions about relevance to your specific industry?
Your 3-minute response to our survey will help build a resource that addresses your actual barriers—not theoretical ones. In return, survey participants will receive priority access when we launch and exclusive first-month content completely free. - George Sloane, Publisher, Ormond Local Pulse
