🏥 Dr. Jessica Marshall Returns to Her Roots
For Dr. Jessica Marshall, scrubbing in at AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway isn’t just another day at work—it’s a homecoming.
Raised in Ormond Beach and now practicing as Flagler County’s only female general surgeon, Marshall brings with her years of education, hands-on experience, and a legacy of five generations in medicine. From her early days at Father Lopez Catholic High School to her surgical training in Tampa and Bradenton, she’s never lost sight of where she came from—or where she wanted to go. “In surgery, you can change someone’s world overnight,” she says.
Specializing in robotic and minimally invasive procedures, Marshall is now improving lives in the very community that shaped hers. Whether it’s gallbladder surgery or giving directions to the best crab legs in town, Dr. Marshall is both healer and hometown hero.

🌧️ Volusia Invests $133.5M in Flood Fixes
In a major move for future resilience, the Volusia County Council has approved a $133.5 million stormwater and flood mitigation plan, largely funded by HUD’s Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery.
$100 million will go toward upgrading stormwater infrastructure and drainage systems, reducing the risk of future flooding. A voluntary buyout program, backed by $20 million, will help homeowners in high-risk flood zones relocate. Another $20.2 million will fund repairs and home replacements for low- to moderate-income residents.
This plan was shaped by months of public feedback and emphasizes long-term, community-wide protection. County officials say it’s about more than rebuilding—it’s about building smarter.
Final approval from HUD is pending, but locals can track updates and get more info at transform386.org.

⛪ Pope Leo XIV Finds Fans in Ormond Beach
Catholics across Volusia County are celebrating the historic election of Pope Leo XIV—born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago and the first-ever U.S.-born pope.
The excitement is especially strong in Ormond Beach, where retired Rev. Fred Ruse and others praised Pope Leo’s social justice values and humble leadership. Ruse, who still serves local parishes, called the selection “another beautiful surprise,” pointing to the new pope’s years of missionary work in Peru and ties to the inclusive Augustinian Order.
Locals are hopeful Pope Leo will bring energy, unity, and continued focus on human dignity—building on the legacy of Pope Francis. As Ruse put it: “We’re walking this together… Prevost fits that bill perfectly.”

🚀 SpaceX Launch Dazzles Night Owls
If you caught a flash in the sky before sunrise this morning, you weren’t dreaming.
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral during the early hours of May 11 as part of the Starlink 6-91 mission, sending another batch of internet satellites into low-Earth orbit. With a launch window from 2:28 a.m. to 6:59 a.m., viewers from Daytona Beach to Vero got a clear view of the spectacular night launch.
Known for sonic booms and glowing sky trails, these late-night launches often add a cinematic moment to Florida’s skies. If you missed this one, don’t worry—there are more on the horizon, and the state’s rocket calendar is staying busy.

Are You Leaving Money on the Table by Not Using AI?
While major corporations invest millions in artificial intelligence, most local businesses in our community are missing out on tools that could dramatically cut costs and boost productivity—simply because there's no clear roadmap for implementation.
As someone who's leveraged AI to revolutionize our newsletter operations, I've seen the difference: tasks that once consumed several hours now wrap up in minutes. Customer insights that once required expensive consultants now appear at the click of a button.
I'm exploring creating a community hub where local business owners and individuals alike can discover AI applications , access step-by-step guides, and connect with others who've successfully integrated these tools.
But first, I need to understand what's holding you back. Is it confusion about where to start? Concerns about cost? Questions about relevance to your specific industry?
Your 3-minute response to our survey will help build a resource that addresses your actual barriers—not theoretical ones. In return, survey participants will receive priority access when we launch and exclusive first-month content completely free. - George Sloane, Publisher, Ormond Local Pulse
