❤ The History of Mother's Day-From Personal Tribute to National Holiday
Mother’s Day, as we know it today, has roots in both ancient and modern traditions. Celebrations honoring motherhood can be traced back to the Greeks and Romans, who held festivals for mother goddesses like Rhea and Cybele. In the 16th century, the English observed “Mothering Sunday,” a day when families returned to their "mother church" and children often presented flowers to their mothers.
However, the modern American version of Mother's Day was largely shaped by Anna Jarvis. After her mother's death in 1905, Jarvis campaigned to honor the sacrifices mothers make for their children. She organized the first official Mother's Day celebration in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia. Her efforts paid off in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as a national holiday.
Ironically, Jarvis later became disillusioned with the commercialization of the holiday she helped create. She even spent her later years campaigning against businesses profiting from Mother's Day.
Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide, with various customs and dates, but its core remains the same: a heartfelt tribute to mothers and maternal figures for their love, care, and unshakable presence in our lives.
🚨 Beach Training To Save Lives
With summer approaching and beaches filling up, Volusia County’s emergency and medical response teams are already in action—at least in practice.
To prepare for a potential rise in beach-related emergencies, especially drownings, officials recently conducted three mock rescue simulations across the coastline. The exercises mimicked real-life emergencies, from rescuing a person from the surf to transporting them to Halifax Health, and—if needed—airlifting to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
Led by Beach Safety Ocean Rescue and involving EMS, local fire departments, law enforcement, and air care teams, the drills aim to ensure everyone is in sync before lives are on the line.
Florida continues to lead the nation in unintentional drownings among young children. Volusia County alone sees an average of 6 to 8 drownings and over 3,000 rescues annually. Officials hope this proactive approach can improve outcomes when seconds truly matter.

📜 Help Shape Volusia’s Future..Apply to Join the Charter Review Commission
Here’s your once-in-a-decade chance to make a difference in how Volusia County runs. Applications are now open for the 2026 Charter Review Commission, a citizen-driven board that evaluates and proposes updates to the county charter.
Fifteen members will be appointed by the County Council on July 22. Their recommendations may go to public hearings and, potentially, the 2026 general election ballot.
If you’re passionate about local governance and want a say in Volusia’s future structure, now’s the time. Applications are open until June 30 and available online at volusia.org by searching for “Charter Review Commission.”

🐾 Reminder: Free Rabies Vaccinations and Microchipping Tomorrow
Volusia County Animal Services is making it easy (and free) to keep your pets safe. On Monday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, they’ll be offering complimentary rabies vaccinations and microchipping at Chipper Jones Park in Pierson.
This first-come, first-served event is open to all county residents—proof of residency required. Services apply only to owned cats and dogs, not strays or community animals.
Vaccinating pets against rabies protects both animals and people from a potentially fatal disease, and microchipping offers a reliable way to bring lost pets back home. It's a small action with big benefits—especially during summer travel and outdoor activities.
Don’t forget to bring your ID, and you'll leave with peace of mind and official documentation of your pet’s new protections.

Are You Leaving Money on the Table by Not Using AI?
While major corporations invest millions in artificial intelligence, most local businesses in our community are missing out on tools that could dramatically cut costs and boost productivity—simply because there's no clear roadmap for implementation.
As someone who's leveraged AI to revolutionize our newsletter operations, I've seen the difference: tasks that once consumed several hours now wrap up in minutes. Customer insights that once required expensive consultants now appear at the click of a button.
I'm exploring creating a community hub where local business owners and individuals alike can discover AI applications , access step-by-step guides, and connect with others who've successfully integrated these tools.
But first, I need to understand what's holding you back. Is it confusion about where to start? Concerns about cost? Questions about relevance to your specific industry?
Your 3-minute response to our survey will help build a resource that addresses your actual barriers—not theoretical ones. In return, survey participants will receive priority access when we launch and exclusive first-month content completely free. - George Sloane, Publisher, Ormond Local Pulse
