📚 Cross-County Classrooms: Volusia & Flagler Join Forces

In a move to simplify school zoning amid rapid growth, Volusia County Schools has formalized an agreement with Flagler County to allow students in designated areas to attend schools across county lines. The interlocal agreement primarily impacts families in Hunter’s Ridge, especially those in the Flagler County side of the new Ormond Station neighborhood. Currently, 68 Flagler students already attend Volusia schools, with that number expected to grow to over 460 as development continues. While the agreement doesn’t include transportation, families benefit from schools being closer to home. Volusia School Board members praised the effort as both practical and student-focused. Funding will follow the student, so the agreement isn’t expected to financially burden the districts. For now, this annual pact just makes geographic and educational sense.

🎓 Driven to Succeed: Joseph Monroe’s Dual Graduation

Mainland High senior Joseph Monroe isn’t just graduating high school—he’s also earning his associate’s degree from Daytona State College, thanks to the Mainland Collegiate Institute program. As part of the program’s first graduating class, Monroe loaded his senior year with rigorous coursework, including both AP and AICE physics, showing he’s not one to take the easy route. Teachers describe him as thoughtful, engaged, and intellectually curious. But Monroe’s talents go beyond academics—he balances work, faith, and leadership with grace, crediting his success to supportive educators and strong values. With a 4.6 GPA and plans to become an engineer, Monroe is headed to UCF this fall, leaving behind a legacy of excellence at Mainland.

🔥 Burn Ban Lifted—but Keep the Matches in Check

Thanks to recent rainfall, Volusia County Fire Rescue has lifted the outdoor burn ban for unincorporated areas, Oak Hill, Lake Helen, and Pierson. However, fire officials are urging residents to stay cautious—dry vegetation still poses a risk, and we’re not out of drought conditions yet. Burning piles over 8 feet requires a permit from the Florida Forest Service, and smaller piles must still follow safety guidelines: keep them away from structures and roads, burn only yard waste, and never leave a fire unattended. It’s great news for those itching to do yard work—just be safe and respectful of your surroundings.

💡 Help for Seniors Facing Energy Emergencies

If you’re a senior in Volusia County struggling with past-due energy bills, help is available. The Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP) offers financial relief to households with at least one member aged 60 or older. Funds can cover overdue bills or deposits for electric, gas, or propane services. Income eligibility varies by household size—ranging from $30,588 for a single person to $81,175 for households of eight. Applicants must show proof of need and can apply in person or by phone. It’s a lifeline for many, especially with higher cooling costs during Florida’s relentless summer.

🌡️ Summer Sizzle: What’s the Right Thermostat Setting?

With forecasters predicting another sweltering Florida summer, many residents are eyeing their air conditioning settings. While 78°F is often touted as ideal for energy savings, comfort and cost vary household to household. ENERGY STAR doesn’t endorse a specific temperature—so it’s really about finding your balance between staying cool and managing your electric bill. Even small adjustments can make a difference: raising your thermostat by just one degree could save up to 5% on cooling costs. If you’re heading out for the day, FPL recommends setting it to 85°F with the fan on auto. And yes, even your pets appreciate that little breeze.
