🔥 Fire Danger Still Smolders in Volusia
Despite a welcome round of rain, wildfire risk across Central Florida remains high—and Volusia County is still on alert. The Florida Forest Service lifted burn bans in some counties, but officials warn that dry vegetation and gusty winds can still spark fast-moving fires. Cliff Frazier, a Fire Mitigation Specialist with the agency, said crews have been stretched thin, managing up to four fires a day. Memorial Day grilling and fireworks are of particular concern, prompting increased staffing. “Just because a burn ban is lifted doesn’t mean it’s safe to burn,” Frazier stressed.

🏘️ School Impact Fees to Reflect Housing Shifts
Volusia County Schools will revise their student impact fees in 2026, and early indicators point to big changes. A sharp increase in students living in apartments and mobile homes has shifted the student generation rate, which could affect how much developers are charged to offset school-related costs. From 2013 to 2022, multifamily student counts rose 31% and mobile home counts by 44%, while single-family home student numbers dropped. Officials say the trend mirrors a regional uptick in renters and affordability challenges. The school board previously adopted more moderate fees but will revisit them as part of a new study and consultant process launching in late 2025.

☀️ Summer Heat Kicks Off Early in Florida
If it feels like summer’s arrived ahead of schedule, you're not wrong. Temperatures across Florida are set to soar into the mid-90s next week, possibly breaking May records—especially in North Florida. The National Weather Service warns of abnormally high daytime and even nighttime lows, with conditions expected to persist through May 22. NOAA forecasts this as the start of a sweltering season, with predictions for above-average temps, severe weather, and an active hurricane cycle. If Memorial Day is your summer kickoff, it’s shaping up to be a steamy one.

🏗️ Permitting Just Got Easier in Volusia
Permits and code compliance got you tied up in red tape? Volusia County’s Permit and Code Concierge Service is cutting through the clutter. In its first year, the program helped over 330 residents and businesses navigate zoning, construction, utility connections, and more. Concierge Ricardi Calixte serves as a one-stop liaison to simplify and streamline the process. Whether you're fencing in a backyard or launching a commercial build, he’ll help make sense of the requirements—at no cost. The initiative is part of the county’s push for more transparent, accessible public services.
