🎵 Volusia Strikes a High Note with Music Education Award

For the second straight year, Volusia County Schools has been named one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” by The NAMM Foundation. The award, now in its 26th year, celebrates districts that offer top-tier music instruction and access across all grade levels. From general music in elementary schools to advanced high school courses like AP Music Theory and IB Music, Volusia’s programs hit all the right notes. Students have even performed on major international stages like Carnegie Hall and Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Superintendent Carmen Balgobin called the honor a celebration of music’s wide-ranging impact on students’ well-being.

💈 A Cut Above: Barber Training Begins at Branch Jail

Volusia County is giving inmates at the Branch Jail a fresh opportunity—literally. A new barber training program, developed in partnership with Daytona State College, launched May 5 to equip participants with technical and hands-on skills needed for state licensure. The six-week course covers haircutting, customer service, and sanitation. Corrections Director Joe DeMore says the program aims to reduce recidivism by providing a pathway to stable employment post-release. Eight participants are already sharpening their skills, scissors in hand, and looking toward a brighter future.

🔥 Prescribed Burns: A Lesson from 1998’s Wildfires

Florida’s approach to wildfire prevention changed drastically after the devastating fires of 1998 scorched parts of Volusia, Brevard, and Flagler counties. Today, state and local officials rely on prescribed burns to clear flammable vegetation before wildfires can take hold. One such burn took place in April at the Three Forks Conservation Area in Palm Bay, where helicopters dropped “fireballs” and ground crews ignited brush with precision tools. The practice reduces fuel loads and creates room for wildlife to return. Land manager Johnny Baker says it’s all part of living with fire—safely and strategically.

🌀 Hurricane Season Prep: Special Needs Registry Now Open

With hurricane season starting June 1, Volusia County Emergency Management is urging residents with medical or mobility challenges to register with the state’s Special Needs Registry. This secure database helps emergency teams identify individuals who might need extra assistance—like medical equipment requiring electricity or transportation to a shelter. The registry is especially useful during evacuations, though officials stress it’s not a replacement for hospital-level care. Residents can register at snr.flhealthresponse.com or call 386-254-1500 for help. Staying prepared now could mean staying safe later.

🌴 Bahama Breeze Bids Daytona Farewell

The tropical-themed Bahama Breeze restaurant near Daytona International Speedway has closed its doors—seemingly without warning. Located at 1786 W International Speedway Blvd, the restaurant was a popular pit stop for race fans and locals alike. A sign posted in the window thanked customers and directed them to nearby sister brands like Olive Garden and Cheddar’s. The closure is part of a broader move by parent company Darden Restaurants Inc., which is shutting down more than a dozen locations nationwide. Fortunately, Bahama Breeze fans can still get their fix at locations in Orlando.
