🌱 Beautifying the Boulevard: Native Plants Coming to Ormond Medians
Ormond Beach is giving its medians a native makeover. At its May 20 meeting, the City Commission unanimously approved a $221,000 work authorization to A.M. Weigel Construction to replace damaged or missing plants in medians throughout the city.
While the iconic Medjool palms are staying put, new additions will include drought-tolerant Florida natives like Dwarf Yaupon Holly, Coontie, Blue Eyed Grass, and Sea Purslane. The refresh spans key roadways such as downtown Ormond (from U.S. 1 to A1A), West Granada Boulevard, North Nova Road, and North U.S. 1.
The project will be funded through the city's tree fund and Community Redevelopment Agency dollars, combining beauty and sustainability with smart budgeting.

🌮 Margarita Island Drops Anchor on the Beachside
There’s a new reason to head toward the ocean: Margarita Island has opened in Ormond Beach at 24 Ocean Shore Blvd., bringing a mix of beach vibes, bold flavors, and hometown pride.
Owned by David and Elizabeth Gonzalez, the Mexican restaurant is the couple’s fourth and most personal venture. David, who once lived behind Seabreeze High and worked locally for over a decade, calls the new location a homecoming.
The menu includes handcrafted margaritas, seafood favorites, brunch offerings, and signature tacos—all served in a festive, coastal setting. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Margarita Island hopes to offer more than a meal—it aims to be a go-to spot for birthdays, happy hours, and everyday celebrations.
“We’re not just a little taqueria,” said Gonzalez. “We’re something different—better quality, better service, and a better atmosphere.”

🚨 Beach Brawl Sparks Warnings Ahead of Holiday Crowds
As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Volusia County officials are on high alert following a beachside brawl involving a reckless driver. On May 15, deputies arrested 34-year-old Kelvin Kelly of Umatilla after he allegedly performed donuts near beachgoers in Daytona and got into a fistfight with a bystander who tried to intervene.
The incident, which was caught on video, ended with Kelly being charged with disorderly conduct and resisting an officer without violence. He reportedly appeared intoxicated and refused to cooperate with deputies.
With beaches and parking lots expected to fill early throughout the holiday, law enforcement is issuing a reminder: safety is top priority. The beach patrol has already declared an “all hands on deck” operation to handle the holiday influx.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, stay alert, and keep celebrations respectful to avoid turning fun in the sun into a scene.
