🪼 Sting Alert: Jellyfish Make a Splash in Volusia County
It’s not just sunburn you have to watch for at the beach this week—jellyfish have made themselves known with more than 400 stings reported since Memorial Day weekend. Volusia County Beach Safety Deputy Chief A.J. Miller said that while most stings were mild, purple flags are flying to warn swimmers of dangerous marine life. Portuguese man-of-war sightings also stirred concern, though no major medical incidents were reported.
The culprit? Likely increased beach crowds and warmer waters. Officials urge swimmers to use the Volusia Beaches app to locate lifeguard towers, where vinegar treatments are available. If you're stung and not near a lifeguard, emergency services are just a call away.
Beachgoers, beware: those trailing tentacles can still pack a punch even on dry sand.

🏡 ‘Last Call’ for Paradise: Latitude Margaritaville Sells Out
The sun has officially set on new home sales at Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach. The Jimmy Buffett-themed retirement community just sold its final new home—a cheerful “Conch Cottage”—to a couple from Montreal. The community, which opened in 2017, has now placed all 3,763 new homes under contract.
What drew the buyers wasn’t just the tropical flair, but the friendly vibe and thoughtful home design. Latitude Margaritaville earned global attention at launch, and its mix of resort amenities, live music, and laid-back living made it a top-selling retirement haven for years.
While you can’t buy a new home there anymore, resale opportunities remain. And with more Latitude communities planned across the country, this brand of beachy retirement isn’t going anywhere.

🦠 Jet Ski Injury Leads to Rare Bacterial Scare
What began as a carefree afternoon on Lake Dora turned frightening for Bobby Henderson of Tavares. After cutting his shin while retrieving his Jet Ski, Henderson contracted Edwardsiella tarda, a rare freshwater bacterium. Within 24 hours, he was in extreme pain, feverish, and headed to the hospital.
Doctors performed emergency surgery and removed the infection—something even the medical staff had never seen firsthand. Though he’s recovering, Henderson now warns others: any water-related injury, no matter how minor, deserves close attention.
Experts say these bacteria live in many freshwater bodies and can enter through small cuts. Symptoms like spreading redness or fever should never be ignored. Henderson’s quick action likely saved his leg—and his life.
