🐠 Marine Science Center Returns with a Splash
Volusia County’s Marine Science Center is back on June 24 after a nine-month, $4.2 million renovation that brings fresh life—and reef life—to its coastal educational hub. Visitors can look forward to new and expanded exhibits, including a living reef, a coral lab for student research, and the John Crisp Artificial Reef Exhibit. The facility also added a 1,500-square-foot multipurpose education building and improved visitor traffic flow with updated parking.
Prices remain unchanged: $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for kids, and free for little ones under two. Annual passes are available, and pre-existing passholders will have their memberships extended to cover the closure period.
Even while the doors were shut, the staff remained busy, caring for birds and sea turtles. Since 2002, the center has rehabilitated over 27,000 turtles and reptiles.

🪙 Could That Penny Be Worth Hundreds? Here's How to Tell
The penny may be on its way out, but it could be leaving behind a treasure hunt. With the U.S. Mint preparing to wind down production in 2026, rare pennies are getting attention—and maybe even appraisals. From the elusive 1943 copper penny (worth up to $85,000) to the 1955 doubled-die and the rare 1909-S VDB, collectors are checking their jars for overlooked gems.
Most valuable pennies fall between 1909 and 1958, and condition matters. A well-kept wheat penny from the right year could go for $20 to $30. But if you've got one with a minting error or a rare date, it could be worth a small fortune.
So yes, it's time to shake out the couch cushions. You just might find a mini jackpot hiding in plain sight.

🥫 Wood You Like Stew With That? Hormel Issues Recall

Before you heat up that can of Dinty Moore beef stew, check the label. Hormel Foods Corporation is recalling over 256,000 pounds of its product due to reports of wood pieces turning up in the meat. The affected cans are 20-ounce sizes marked “BEST BY FEB 2028” with lot code “T02045” and establishment number “EST 199G.”
Three consumer complaints prompted the recall, although no injuries have been reported so far. Still, the USDA advises tossing the product or returning it to the store. The potentially contaminated stew was distributed nationwide.
Consumers with questions are encouraged to contact Hormel or the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline. As always, pantry safety comes first—no one wants surprise splinters in their supper.
