⭐ City Contracts, Seawalls, Campers, County Jobs

🌳 Landscaping Contract and School Officer Agreement Put on Hold

The Ormond Beach City Commission hit the pause button on two major contracts during its June 3 meeting. First up: a $1.9 million auto-renewing deal with Yellowstone Landscape, the city's go-to since 2012 for maintaining over 375 sites. Commissioners, while pleased with Yellowstone’s work, voiced interest in seeking competitive bids next year. They agreed to revisit the renewal after staff provides updated service maps and documents.

Also tabled was the city’s cost-sharing agreement with Volusia County Schools for a School Resource Officer at Ormond Beach Middle School. While the city currently splits the cost, Commissioner Travis Sargent questioned whether the school district should fully fund the role. Other municipalities have similar 50/50 arrangements, but concerns about taxpayer fairness led to postponement pending further information.

🌊 Buried Seawalls Nearly Finished in Ormond-by-the-Sea and Flagler Beach

FDOT’s ambitious $117 million seawall project is nearly complete just in time for hurricane season. The 1.3-mile buried seawalls — one in Ormond-by-the-Sea and the other in Flagler Beach — are designed to protect A1A from future storm damage and sand erosion. Unlike traditional structures, these “secant” walls are hidden beneath dunes and vegetation, making them both effective and discreet.

Officials say the Flagler Beach wall is nearly done, with a final section awaiting a turtle nest hatch. The Ormond wall is 85% finished, and both are expected to wrap by year’s end. FDOT's team emphasized that the innovative design offers the most robust protection the corridor has ever had. They credit collaboration with local governments and environmental agencies for the project’s success.

🪶 Campers Explore Native American Heritage at Summer Camp

The Ormond Beach Historical Society’s summer camp kicked off with a celebration of Timicuan heritage. Kids ages 8 to 11 participated in immersive activities led by Jim Sawgrass, a Muscogee Creek historian, and Henry Mekseree, both of whom shared cultural traditions, tools, and stories from Florida’s earliest inhabitants.

Held at the Anderson-Price Memorial Building, the weeklong “Discover and Explore Ormond Beach” camp helps young residents connect with their local roots. Activities include learning about the area’s founders, its racing history, and the rich legacy of Native American life that once thrived here. It’s history with heart—and hands-on fun.

🛠️ Volusia County Hosts Job Fair for Public Works Careers

Looking for a job that builds your future and your community? Volusia County’s Public Works Job Fair takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, June 17, at the Road and Bridge Northeast Facility in Daytona Beach.
