🏖️ Ormond Beach Named One of America’s Best Places to Live

Ormond Beach has once again proven it's more than just a beautiful coastal town—it’s one of the best places to live in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report's 2025-2026 rankings. Coming in at No. 162 out of 859 cities nationwide, the city scored high in quality of life, job market strength, and scenic appeal.

Local gems like the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, Tomoka and Bulow Creek State Parks, and Central Park’s fishing piers and kayak ramps make the city a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The Granada Boulevard business district also offers rich culture and community events at spots like Rockefeller Gardens Park, The Casements, and the Ormond Memorial Art Museum & Gardens.

Food lovers can dive into the global menus at Sovereign 63, feast on steaks at Alexander’s Prime, or savor Latin-inspired comfort food at Tango’s on Yonge Street.

A local landmark famous for cole slaw wrestling is now at the center of a lawsuit following the 2023 death of Jason Veach during a fight. Sopotnick’s Cabbage Patch Bar in Samsula, a longtime Bike Week hotspot, is being sued by Veach’s widow, who claims the bar failed to prevent a deadly altercation.

According to witness reports and official records, Veach—described as large, loud, and aggressive that night—was involved in a physical fight with several other patrons. An elderly man reportedly wielded a hatchet, though no arrests were made and no working security cameras captured the brawl. The cause of death: asphyxiation.

With no charges filed and conflicting testimonies from multiple witnesses, the event raises lingering questions about accountability, excessive force, and bar safety protocols. The civil case now hopes to bring some form of justice—or at least, clarity.

🚑 Daytona State Shines in Paramedic Rankings

When emergencies strike, Volusia County can rest easier knowing that Daytona State College is preparing some of Florida’s top first responders. The college’s Emergency Medical Services program has been recognized as one of the best in the state based on new data from the Florida Department of Health.

With a 79% pass rate on the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians paramedic exam, DSC ranks 5th out of 44 paramedic programs statewide, well ahead of the national average. The college also landed in the top half of EMT programs, with a 72% pass rate compared to the national average of 67%.

President Dr. Tom LoBasso credits the school's dedicated instructors and hands-on training for the strong performance, saying the program’s success reflects the college’s commitment to excellence in life-saving education.
