🌫️ Saharan Dust: The Summer Sauna Nobody Asked For

Every summer, plumes of Saharan Dust hitch a ride across the Atlantic and settle over Florida. While these dry air masses from North Africa often deliver stunning sunsets and tame tropical storms, they may also be adding insult to sweaty injury.

Meteorologist Brooks Garner of FOX 35 suggests that the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) could actually make Florida’s famous humidity feel worse. How? The SAL creates a “cap” in the atmosphere — a warm layer that traps moisture near the ground and blocks cooler air from circulating. The result? Dew points soar into the upper 70s and 80s, turning the air into a thick, tropical soup.

This phenomenon is especially steamy in Florida and the Gulf Coast, where wetlands, lakes, and the ocean provide nonstop moisture. Scientists haven’t fully nailed down the connection, but anecdotal evidence — and our sticky shirts — point to SAL as a humidity amplifier.

🏗️ Development Bill Could Tie Local Governments’ Hands

A new piece of legislation — Florida Senate Bill 180 — is making waves in Ormond Beach and beyond. If Governor DeSantis signs it, local municipalities will be restricted from making zoning and land-use changes that are more restrictive than current laws through 2027. That includes limiting development in wetlands, flood zones, and even imposing post-hurricane moratoriums.

Ormond Beach Planning Board members voiced concern during a recent meeting. Planning Director Steven Spraker explained the law could limit the city’s ability to react to fast-paced growth, even as new communities like Plantation Oaks and Ormond Crossings expand.

Though some flexibility would remain — cities could still negotiate for open spaces and conservation areas — local leaders say the bill, originally about emergency preparedness, now unfairly blocks municipalities from managing their own growth. Volusia County and several cities have already sent veto requests to the governor.

🌧️ Homeowners vs. Lennar: Flooding Lawsuit Soaks Up Attention

Two Volusia County couples are taking on homebuilding giant Lennar Homes in court, claiming a neighborhood development near Deltona has turned their lives into a flood zone.

The suit alleges that Lennar’s stormwater system in Vineland Reserve was poorly designed, causing repeated flooding that’s damaged homes and made yards unusable. Filed by Morgan & Morgan, the complaint argues that despite repeated alerts from residents, Lennar hasn’t made meaningful repairs.

This isn’t the firm’s first splash in Volusia — it’s also representing other homeowners over similar flooding near Miller Lake in Orange City.

The plaintiffs say that before the new neighborhood, their homes never experienced serious flooding. Now, they’re calling for accountability — and some dry land.
