⭐ Surveying The Coast, Kuiper Launch, Job Scams

🌊 Keeping Our Coastline in Check
In a continued effort to defend its sandy borders, the Volusia County Council has greenlit funding for its annual beach profile surveys. These scientific surveys, conducted in partnership with Taylor Engineering since 2019, provide crucial data on how sand moves along the county’s coastlines. By tracking shifts from the dunes to 30 feet offshore, the county can more accurately plan for storm recovery, erosion control, and long-term beach preservation.
Survey crews—armed with waders, all-terrain vehicles, and survey boats—collect high-resolution topographic data that shapes everything from local infrastructure protection to coordination with federal agencies. Results from this year’s survey will be in by the end of the year, and they’ll help ensure our shores remain a safe, resilient destination for years to come.

🚀 Project Kuiper Set for Liftoff Monday
Cape Canaveral is about to roar to life again as United Launch Alliance prepares to send Amazon’s second batch of Project Kuiper satellites into orbit. The launch is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. Monday, June 16, from Launch Complex 41. Riding atop a mighty Atlas V rocket equipped with five solid rocket boosters, the mission will deliver 27 satellites into low-Earth orbit.
Part of Amazon’s goal to deliver global broadband access—especially in underserved areas—Project Kuiper is aiming for a constellation of over 3,200 satellites. With this launch, 54 will be operational. The weather looks promising, with a 75% chance of favorable conditions. If all goes well, this marks another milestone in Amazon’s $10 billion push to catch up to SpaceX’s Starlink, which already has a sizable lead in the satellite internet race.

⚠️ Job Scams on the Rise as Unemployment Hits 400K
With over 400,000 Floridians unemployed this spring, scammers are seizing the opportunity to target job seekers. According to the FTC, Americans lost a staggering $764.8 million to job and business opportunity scams in 2024—an increase of nearly $250 million from the year before.
Elissa Murray, a Central Florida resident, was nearly caught in a sophisticated fake job scam. After posting her resume online, she received what appeared to be a legitimate job offer from someone claiming to represent Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. The offer came complete with an interview via Teams, an employment letter, and even a check for $2,500. Fortunately, her bank flagged the check as fraudulent before she sent any money back—a common tactic used by scammers to steal funds.
Experts advise job hunters to independently verify company details, avoid too-good-to-be-true offers, and never deposit unexpected checks. In the age of digital hiring, a little extra caution can go a long way.
