⭐ Aura Takeoff, Revenue Shortfall, DSC Tuition Freeze, Property Tax Increase?

🛩️ French Aircraft Maker Takes Off in Daytona Beach
A major aerospace player is landing in Volusia. French aircraft manufacturer Aura Aero has announced it will open its first U.S. plant in Daytona Beach, bringing a sky-high investment of $200 million. Supported by Space Florida, the project includes two manufacturing facilities: a 10,000-square-foot plant opening this month at Embry-Riddle’s Research Park for two-seater planes, and a 500,000-square-foot plant for their 19-seat hybrid-electric aircraft. The larger plant is expected to create 1,000 jobs averaging $70,000 a year. This expansion also nullifies the need for millions in local tax incentives, thanks to exemptions under the state partnership.

🅿️ Off-Beach Parking Revenue Falls Short
Volusia County’s off-beach parking experiment isn’t cashing in as expected. Although officials forecasted $7.1 million in revenue for 2025 from the ParkVolusia program, the actual projection has dropped to $2.9 million. The shortfall stems from overestimated figures by a consultant. Still, officials remain optimistic: the program will still net around $1 million after expenses, reducing the county’s subsidy burden for beach services. Residents retain free parking access, while the county rolls out automated systems to improve service.

🎓 Daytona State Freezes Tuition Again
In good news for students, Daytona State College will freeze tuition and fees for the 15th consecutive year for the 2025–26 academic cycle. The decision, approved by the school’s Board of Trustees, keeps DSC among the most affordable four-year public institutions in the nation. The freeze applies to all programs, including bachelor’s, associate, certificate, and adult education. President Tom LoBasso called the move “an investment in our community,” ensuring students continue to access affordable, high-quality education.

💰 Property Taxes Could Rise as Budget Pressures Mount
Volusia County residents may feel the pinch in their property tax bills this year. A combination of budget overruns, missed revenue targets (especially from off-beach parking), and a $14 million increase in the sheriff’s budget is pushing officials to propose higher rates across several taxing districts. While millage rates may technically stay flat, rising property values mean most homeowners would still see an increase. Meanwhile, some funds — like the Library and Fire District — may move to rollback rates, maintaining revenue levels without additional burden. The county’s final tax rates will be determined after public hearings in September.
