⭐ Summer Starts Today, Learner’s Permits, WalMart Expansion, UBIC teacher Arrested

☀️ Summer Solstice Shines Brightest Today

The summer solstice arrives today June 21, marking the official start of summer and the longest day of the year. It’s the moment when the Northern Hemisphere tilts closest to the sun, bringing with it more daylight than any other day on the calendar—an ideal time to soak up the sunshine and connect with nature.

The term “solstice” comes from Latin, meaning “sun standing still,” which refers to the way the sun appears to pause at its highest point in the sky before reversing direction. For skywatchers and sun-seekers alike, the solstice offers a natural moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate the season’s warmest stretch.

Many cultures across the globe observe the solstice with festivals, bonfires, and gatherings, honoring themes of light, growth, and renewal. Whether you plan to rise early for a glowing sunrise, linger outdoors through the extended twilight, or simply appreciate the added daylight from your front porch, this day is a gentle reminder of summer’s fleeting magic.

Be sure to take a moment to step outside, breathe in the warmth, and celebrate the celestial rhythm that brings us back to the light—because after today, the days slowly begin to shorten once again.

🚗 New Rules Ahead for Florida Teen Drivers

Starting July 1, teens in Florida hoping to get behind the wheel will need more than just enthusiasm and a set of car keys. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is rolling out new requirements for Class E learner’s permits. Teens ages 15 to 17 will need to complete a six-hour driver education course, a four-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course, and provide REAL ID-compliant documentation — including proof of address and parental consent.

The move aims to raise safety standards for young drivers and better prepare them for the road. Teens who already hold a permit or have completed the TLSAE before July 1 won’t be affected. More details and required documents can be found at flaglertax.gov and course options are available at flhsmv.gov or flvs.net.

🛒 Walmart Reworks Remodel Plan for Ormond Beach Store

Image: City of Ormond Beach

Walmart is trying again—this time with a fresh coat of paint and a reworked plan. After getting feedback from the Ormond Beach Planning Board in March, the big-box retailer has resubmitted plans for a 4,752-square-foot expansion at its Granada Boulevard location. The revised proposal includes a Mediterranean Beach-inspired exterior, upgraded lighting, and a dedicated building for online grocery pickup—accessible only to employees.

A letter from CPH Corp., Walmart’s civil engineering firm, addressed past concerns, from store aesthetics to transient issues in the buffer zone. The company says it’s already cleared invasive vegetation, arranged law enforcement support, and added safety measures between the store and neighboring apartments.

Inside, expect updates to pharmacy and grocery sections, technology improvements, and energy-efficient enhancements. The project is slated for review at the July 10 Planning Board meeting.

🚨 Holly Hill Teacher Arrested in Disturbing Porn Case

A Holly Hill educator is behind bars following a recent investigation. On June 20, sixth-grade UBIC Academy teacher David R. McKeown, 47, was arrested on 19 counts of child pornography possession and six counts involving animals. The investigation began after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Searches of McKeown’s home and school uncovered graphic images, along with AI-generated content and communications with others where he shared student data and images. Authorities also report he produced disturbing content involving his family pet.

McKeown is being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond. UBIC Academy, a Christian K-12 school, has not listed him on their staff webpage as of June 20. The police encourage anyone with additional information to contact Det. Corp. Kelsey Palm at 386-492-0415 or [email protected].
