💍 75 Years of Love: Ormond Couple Bud and Carolyn’s Enduring Bond

Ormond-by-the-Sea residents Robert "Bud" and Carolyn Gerard recently hit a rare and heartwarming milestone: their 75th wedding anniversary. Married on June 17, 1950, this Ohio-born couple now calls sunny Florida home, where they continue to inspire with their unwavering devotion.

Their love story began with a blind date at Bud’s senior class picnic in 1947. Three years later, they tied the knot and went on to build a life rich with love, family, and community. Bud served in the Army and retired as a postmaster, while Carolyn, an educator with a master’s degree, dedicated her career to teaching in Wilmington, Ohio.

Now, decades and adventures later, the Gerards enjoy time with their two daughters, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. They're active members of Grace Lutheran Church and still cherish their shared passion for travel. As their family put it: “They have shared a life of love for each other, their family, their church and their love of travel.”

💐 Wedding Bells and Grace: Church Marries Eight Couples for Free

Transitioning from lifelong love to new beginnings, Tomoka Christian Church celebrated its 10th annual free wedding event by marrying eight couples, including some with stories straight from the heart. The event, hosted on June 20, covered everything from flowers to food — with the help of generous local vendors and 75 enthusiastic volunteers.

Among the couples was Nancy Mehler and George White, who had been together for 25 years but never officially wed. After learning about the event at a Sunday service, they decided to say "I do" in the eyes of God — and in front of loved ones from as far as Maryland and Massachusetts. The ceremony, Mehler said, made her feel “special” again.

Director Christina Moore, who launched the event a decade ago after a life-changing napkin note, shared how this tradition offers grace and dignity to all, no matter their circumstances. From brides in T-shirts to Cinderella gowns, each love story is celebrated equally. Over 150 couples have been married through this effort, which Moore calls “a beautiful way to love people.”

🚗 Paying It Forward: A Nurse's Selfless Gift

Rounding out this week’s feel-good trio is a story of everyday heroism. Trainet Kauffman, a patient care technician at AdventHealth Palm Coast, was struggling without a car after hers was totaled. With a son requiring medical care and no reliable way to commute, her situation grew more urgent by the day.

Enter Kirsten Uveges, a fellow nurse with a heart as big as her skillset. She and her husband had a spare vehicle — a gift from her father — and chose to give it to Kauffman, no payment required. “Sometimes the answer to someone’s prayer is sitting right in your driveway,” said Uveges.

For Kauffman, it wasn’t just a car; it was a lifeline. It meant easier commutes, fewer logistical nightmares, and the ability to focus on her patients and son. The gesture reflects a team culture of compassion, where coworkers step up without hesitation. “No strings attached. Just kindness,” Kauffman said.
