🌟 Honoring a Healthcare Hero
Misty Kingsley of Ormond Beach has been named the 2025 Social Services Professional of the Year by the Florida Health Care Association. As the social services director at Avante at Ormond Beach, Misty was selected for her commitment to resident care and mentorship within her field. Her accolade was part of FHCA's annual Compassion in Action Awards, recognizing individuals who truly go above and beyond in long-term care.
FHCA CEO Emmett Reed described her as someone who not only uplifts her residents and colleagues but also builds community through leadership—like when she founded the National Long Term Care Social Services Association in Orange County. Whether she’s guiding new professionals or advocating for vulnerable seniors, Misty’s approach is consistently fueled by empathy and excellence.
Her recognition came during FHCA’s July conference in Orlando. Hats off to Misty for putting heart into healthcare.

💸 Budgeting Blues at the School Board
Over in Volusia County Schools, board member Donna Brosemer has raised a pointed concern: are decisions being driven by duty—or just the appearance of public disinterest? After welcoming 300 new teachers, the school board dove into budget talks that, according to Brosemer, lacked meaningful scrutiny.
The preliminary 2025-26 budget appears balanced on the surface, but crucial details are missing in action. Why has a school’s projected cost more than doubled? How much is really being spent on legal fees? And how many employees work in each department? These questions go largely unasked—and unanswered.
Brosemer argues that while Florida Statutes require transparency in “plain language,” the current system obfuscates more than it reveals. She urges the board to remember that their role isn’t just ceremonial. Oversight isn’t optional—it’s their obligation, whether or not the public is watching.

📚 Local Love for the Library
Crafting kindness into every corner, Local Souls—a nonprofit run by Ormond-Daytona Beach sisters Chrissie Parsons and Brenda Hall—recently donated $1,000 to the Friends of the Ormond Beach Library.
The sisters turn their creative talents into community impact, selling handmade stickers, magnets, bookmarks, and more at the Ormond Beach Farmer’s Market. 100% of their proceeds go to local charities, and the library is the latest to benefit from their generosity.
Local Souls has previously supported groups like Salty Family Services and Halifax Urban Ministries, proving that a little local spirit goes a long way. Supporters can find them every Thursday at City Hall Plaza and shop for good with handmade flair.

🌊 Erin Brings Rough Surf, Stay Safe
Hurricane Erin may be losing strength, but its impact is ramping up along Volusia and Flagler beaches. The National Weather Service warns of 6–9-foot surf, dangerous rip currents, and rough boating conditions now through Thursday, Aug. 21.
Beachgoers are strongly urged to swim near lifeguards and avoid the water if possible. Volusia County Beach Safety is in high alert mode, staffing every available lifeguard and closing beach driving during high tides. No water rescues tied specifically to Erin have been reported yet, but the ocean is rougher than usual—and worsening.
“Now is not the time to learn how to surf,” says Tammy Malphurs, Ocean Rescue director. Download the Volusia Beaches app for real-time safety updates before heading out, and stay in front of those lifeguard towers if you dare to dip your toes in.
