City of Ormind Beach
🛒 Ormond Beach Gives Walmart the Green Light
Walmart’s Ormond Beach location is getting a 5,101-square-foot boost to expand its online grocery pickup service—courtesy of a unanimous City Commission vote on August 19. While city officials were initially skeptical due to a messy green belt buffer and uninspiring building design, Walmart came back with a fresh proposal featuring Mediterranean-style architecture, upgraded signage, and improved landscaping.
But there’s a catch: The Commission shortened the originally proposed 18-month timeline to just three months for sprucing up the neglected western buffer area. Commissioner Kristin Deaton wasn’t shy about her displeasure with the current look, calling it “trash.” Walmart agreed the buffer looks rough now, but blamed previous rules that had prohibited them from cleaning it. Now, they’ve got the green light—and a ticking clock.

🌊 Hurricane Erin Brings Rogue Waves and Rip Currents
Hurricane Erin may have weakened, but it's still causing a commotion along Florida’s east coast. Daytona Beach, Volusia, and Flagler counties are under high surf and rip current advisories through at least Friday, August 22, with waves reaching 10 feet. The National Weather Service is warning beachgoers to stay out of the water and for boaters to brace for dangerous seas.
No major incidents have been reported so far, though the pounding surf has knocked out beach conservation poles, temporarily closing some areas to beach driving. Officials urge visitors to swim only near lifeguard towers and check the Volusia Beaches app for updates. Erin is still churning up trouble hundreds of miles offshore—and coastal conditions are expected to remain risky well into the weekend.

🐴 Beach Horseback Riding Proposal Moves Ahead
Volusia County may soon join a growing list of Florida destinations where you can ride horses along the beach. On August 19, county officials voted 5–2 to further study a potential pilot program. While some councilmembers were skeptical—especially with environmental concerns and parking logistics—others see it as a unique experience to boost local tourism.
Proposed sites include Al Weeks North Shore Park and an area near Grace Lutheran Church in Ormond‑by‑the‑Sea. Though details like cleanup requirements, permits, and seasonal restrictions still need to be ironed out, the idea is gaining traction. If approved, it could add an equestrian twist to Volusia’s coastal charm.
