🧯 Tragedy Strikes During Firefighter Training

A sobering moment for Flagler County Fire Rescue as a 40-year-old firefighter hopeful, Fendrick Gabaud of Ormond Beach, died shortly after completing a rigorous physical agility test on August 22. Gabaud, who had recently graduated from fire school and was described as being in good shape, successfully finished the intense test but later complained of shortness of breath. Paramedics on site responded immediately, but Gabaud was pronounced dead at AdventHealth Palm Coast.

The physical test included stair climbs, hose handling, and dragging a 150-pound manikin—all completed under warm weather conditions. An investigation is underway by the Bunnell Police Department, State Fire Marshal, and Medical Examiner's Office. Authorities have not found any indication of foul play and are handling the case with deep compassion for Gabaud's family and the Flagler County firefighting community.

Bunnell Police Chief David Brannon emphasized the risks associated with public safety professions and extended heartfelt condolences to all affected.

👜 Feeding Families and Futures at Power of the Purse

The 22nd annual Power of the Purse event wasn’t just about fashion and fundraising—it was a heartfelt rally against food insecurity, headlined by Carrie Torres, founder of Provision Packs. Torres shared her journey of feeding over 1,000 children each week across 20+ schools in Volusia and Flagler counties. But she also announced something new: “Feeding Soles,” a program under her organization that will provide well-fitting shoes to children in need.

Provision Packs operates with zero red tape—no paperwork, just help—and has now launched the Lightnin' Legacy Endowment Fund to sustain its mission long-term. With food insecurity impacting 13.4% of Volusia County’s population, the support from this event—held at The Shores Resort and Spa—aims to create lasting change.

United Way’s Women United group emphasized that Power of the Purse is more than a fundraiser. It’s a call to action, raising funds to support families in the ALICE population (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).

🐾 Volusia Officials Scramble as Halifax Humane Pulls Back

Starting October 1, Halifax Humane Society will stop accepting dangerous animals—a change Volusia County officials are calling sudden and disruptive. The nonprofit, which has long served as the county's primary intake for stray and bite-case animals, also plans to phase out stray intakes altogether. County Manager George Recktenwald expressed frustration over the abrupt shift, though Halifax CEO Sean Hawkins insists the topic has been under discussion for months.

Caught off guard or not, Volusia County is adapting fast. Officials have leased a former animal hospital in DeLand and are hiring staff to launch their own shelter by the same date Halifax steps back.

The Humane Society, citing unsustainable financial losses, will pivot toward community-based pet support—offering services like low-cost vet care and dog training, while continuing to promote adoption of pets that have completed their legal hold periods.

While both sides debate the timeline, one thing is clear: the future of animal services in Volusia is undergoing a major transformation.
