🤝Private Sector Bolsters Disaster Readiness
Volusia County Emergency Management is proving that teamwork makes the emergency plan work. By collaborating with the Private Sector Preparedness Group—a part of the Volusia Community Organizations Active in Disasters (COAD)—the county is better prepared to support residents during crises.
A recent boost came from Teledyne Marine employees, who donated clothing and hygiene items to support shelter comfort efforts. These items will help evacuees arriving at shelters with little more than the clothes on their backs, providing a much-needed sense of security in uncertain times.
Through COAD, local businesses are stepping up to ensure shelters have the essential supplies needed. Their role extends beyond donations—COAD also helps mobilize trained volunteers through the Volusia Ready Response Corps, supporting vulnerable residents before, during, and after emergencies.
Businesses interested in joining the preparedness effort are invited to the next Private Sector Preparedness Group meeting on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 a.m., held at the Volusia County Emergency Operations Center in Daytona Beach.

🌱 From Community Pitch to Classroom Crop-OBMS Gets a Green Boost
Ormond Beach Middle School is digging into its new agriculture program thanks to a surprise $17,600 donation. The gift—raised by the Ormond Beach Chamber Leadership Class XXI and matched by the FUTURES Foundation—is the largest ever from a leadership class to a school.
Originally seeking just $1,200 to build a garden and pole barn, OBMS Principal Heather Iannarelli was stunned by the outpouring of support. The funds are helping students explore everything from hydroponic towers to composting, as well as preparing for a Future Farmers of America chapter.
The program goes far beyond farming—students are diving into agricultural literacy, science, technology, and leadership. With six fully booked classes, community volunteers (many without kids at the school) have also rolled up their sleeves to help.
As Leadership Class Leader Cassie Dixon put it, this became more than a class project—it became a community movement.

🏁 Goosebumps and Grit-Allmendinger Talks Daytona Nerves
Daytona International Speedway never loses its magic—just ask AJ Allmendinger. The three-time Cup Series winner is back in town for the Coke Zero Sugar 400 and still gets chills driving through the track’s iconic tunnel.
But what makes his heart race isn’t the 200 mph speed—it’s the traffic.
“It’s the 39 other guys swarming you,” Allmendinger shared, noting the tight pack racing at Daytona requires intense focus and nerves of steel. He gave Spectrum Sports 360 a peek into his world with a slow spin around the track, highlighting just how different race-day intensity can feel.
Despite the chaos, Allmendinger says racing here is something special. After all, it’s not every day you get to chase victory at one of motorsport’s most legendary venues.

🌊 Hurricane Erin Causes Minimal Erosion
Hurricane Erin stirred the waves but left Volusia County’s beaches mostly intact. County officials confirmed that the storm caused only “minimal” erosion, especially near Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores.
That area was expected to take a hit—it sits at the northern edge of a sand berm project where the waves tend to converge. But the berm did its job, acting as a buffer and absorbing the brunt of the wave action.
While some sand may have shifted, it hasn’t vanished. Instead, it naturally redistributed among the dunes, surf zone, and nearshore waters, continuing to provide coastal protection. Follow-up smoothing work and berm reconstruction are set to begin Monday.
Volusia’s investment in shoreline resilience seems to be paying off—one high tide at a time.
