🎶 Remembering Chuck Spano: Ormond’s Rhythm Keeper
If you’ve ever tapped your foot to a drumbeat at the Ormond Beach Celtic Festival, you have Chuck Spano to thank. Spano, who passed away on Aug. 12 at 78, dreamed up the festival 15 years ago and carried it on his shoulders—from booking musicians to playing the bodhrán himself. Friends and colleagues describe him as calm, compassionate, and a man who “never sweated the small stuff.” His love for music brought together clans, vendors, families, and countless musicians into what has become a staple of Ormond’s cultural calendar. Beyond festivals, he was known for his kindness, his unflappable nature, and his devotion to his wife, Pat. As Ormond MainStreet looks ahead, there are plans to dedicate next year’s festival in his honor—ensuring the rhythm he set keeps playing on.

🏫 School Board Dust-Up: NDAs in the Spotlight
From the sounds of drums to the sound of silence—literally. At the Aug. 26 Volusia School Board meeting, a quiet pause followed member Donna Brosemer’s call to rescind non-disclosure agreements signed by about 100 staff. Brosemer argues the NDAs run afoul of Florida’s public records laws, calling them “a naked admission” of hiding information. Superintendent Carmen Balgobin defended the agreements as necessary to protect sensitive district operations, while the board attorney maintained their legality. With dueling opinions (and even a bit of divorce-law analogy), the issue now heads to a future workshop for further debate. It seems the final verdict will take more than one memo.

🚨 Update - Former Teacher Under Investigation at Riverbend
Meanwhile, a much more serious matter has shaken Ormond Beach. Police say Heyward Evans, 48, a former Riverbend Academy teacher and church leader, admitted to groping and kissing three teenage girls 20 years ago. Church elders confronted Evans after spotting allegations on a Reddit forum, and he confessed before being immediately terminated from both school and church leadership roles. The alleged victims, now in their late 30s, have yet to be located, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Pastor Jason Karr described informing families with “great heaviness” but emphasized swift reporting and action once the misconduct surfaced. The investigation continues as the community grapples with the disturbing allegations.
