📊 Broker Battle Delayed in Ormond Beach
Ormond Beach’s plan to potentially switch employee benefits brokers hit pause this week. The City Commission voted 3-0 to reject bids from both the current provider, Brown and Brown, and the challenger, Foundation Risk Partners. Instead, the city will extend its contract with Brown and Brown while exploring long-term options in a future workshop.
The decision follows questions about fee discrepancies: Brown and Brown proposed a $50,000 annual fee, while Foundation Risk Partners came in at nearly double that. Two commissioners abstained due to conflicts of interest, and others stressed the need for more time to evaluate alternatives fairly.
With the current broker contract set to expire at the end of September, staff now face a tight timeline to ensure insurance coverage for employees remains uninterrupted. Commissioner Kristin Deaton emphasized the importance of being thorough—even if that means weathering some public criticism.
Expect this topic to resurface in a more detailed workshop down the line.

🌀 Eyes on the Atlantic - Invest 91L Could Strengthen
The tropics are heating up again as the National Hurricane Center monitors Invest 91L, a broad area of low pressure that’s slowly gaining steam in the eastern Atlantic. With favorable conditions and a high 90% chance of development over the next week, this system could become Tropical Depression Ten—or even earn the name Tropical Storm Gabrielle—by the weekend.
Currently located well east of the Caribbean, Invest 91L is moving westward at 5 to 10 mph and could approach the Lesser Antilles by midweek. While there’s no immediate threat to Florida, forecasters emphasize that it’s too early to determine any long-term impacts. For now, residents are urged to monitor updates and take the opportunity to prep hurricane kits before shelves get bare.
Need an incentive? Florida made specific hurricane supplies permanently tax-free starting Aug. 1, so it’s a good time to stock up on essentials like batteries and generators.

📈 Florida Surgeon General Seeks to End Vaccine Mandates
Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo has announced an aggressive new proposal: end all vaccine mandates in the state. Speaking at Grace Christian School, Ladapo said the Florida Department of Health plans to eliminate current rules and will ask lawmakers to nix any remaining requirements.
The move, supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis, comes with the rollout of a new "Make America Healthy Again" advisory committee, co-chaired by First Lady Casey DeSantis and Lt. Gov. Jay Collins. The group aims to prioritize parental rights, informed consent, and individual responsibility in healthcare decisions.
While the announcement aligns with the administration’s stance against COVID-19 mandates, critics say the plan goes too far. Democrats warn that removing vaccine requirements for diseases like polio and measles could lead to preventable outbreaks and a rollback of decades of public health progress.
Currently, Florida requires vaccinations for children attending daycare and school, with provisions for medical and religious exemptions. If this proposal moves forward, those mandates could disappear, sparking what is sure to be a heated legislative session.
