🛠️ Highbridge Park to Temporarily Close for Repairs

Highbridge Park in Ormond Beach is hitting the pause button for some much-needed TLC. From September 8 to 19, the one-acre riverside gem will be closed to the public while the parking lot undergoes repairs. That means the park, boat ramp, and fishing pier will all be off-limits during that time, with a grand reopening set for September 20.

For those unfamiliar, this petite park packs a punch. Nestled on Highbridge Road, it offers direct access to the Halifax River via a free canoe launch and a popular fishing pier that snakes under the bridge.

While this short-term inconvenience might throw a wrench in your weekend fishing plans, the improvements aim to make your next visit smoother—literally.

Questions about the closure? Reach out to Parks, Recreation, and Culture Director Tim Baylie at [email protected].

🐾 Halifax Humane Society Redefines Animal Rescue

Big changes are underway at Halifax Humane Society (HHS) in Daytona Beach. Under CEO Sean Hawkins, HHS is partnering with the Domestic Abuse Council to shelter pets caught in the cycle of domestic violence—because sometimes saving the human starts with saving the animal.

The new initiative offers emergency housing and veterinary care to pets whose owners are fleeing abusive situations, often risking everything to avoid leaving their animals behind.

Meanwhile, HHS is also reshaping its broader role. Citing high costs and legal complexities, the nonprofit will no longer accept dangerous or rabies-suspect animals after 2026. Instead, those responsibilities will shift to Volusia County, which has fast-tracked a new shelter facility in DeLand to take over intake duties beginning October 1.

Not to worry—HHS isn’t scaling back its mission but sharpening its focus. Plans are underway to expand spay/neuter programs, open a community veterinary hospital, and launch services to help lost pets find their way home.

📚 One Library Card, Infinite Access

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and Volusia County Public Library wants you to know that a single card can unlock more than just a good read.

This year’s theme, “One Card, Endless Possibilities,” says it all. In addition to books and audiobooks, library cardholders can tap into tech help, streaming services, maker spaces, seed libraries, and even blood pressure monitors. Yes, really.

The card also opens doors to free classes, job resources, tutoring, and community events for every age group. For students, it’s an academic lifeline; for adults, a tool for lifelong learning.

And did we mention baking pans? Libraries are getting creative.

Whether you're looking to boost your career, support your child’s education, or just snag the latest bestseller, your next big move could be as simple as getting a card.

Stop by any Volusia County Public Library branch or visit www.volusialibrary.org to sign up.

🦥 Explore the Rainforest—Indoors!

Feeling adventurous but not quite ready to book a flight to the Amazon? The newly opened Rainforest Adventure at the Daytona Aquarium has you covered.

This immersive new section features sloths, otters, tamarins, lorikeets, lemurs, and more—all under one climate-controlled roof. Designed to simulate a real rainforest, the exhibit allows guests to not only see but interact with the animals. Soon, you'll even be able to hand-feed nectar to lorikeets or hang out (literally) with sloths.

The 55,000-square-foot facility already houses over 200 species and continues to expand under founder Cliff Grosvenor’s watchful eye. “We wanted people to feel like they’re actually in the rainforest,” he said—and with mossy rocks and chirping wildlife, they just might.

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the attraction is priced at $29.95 for adults and $25.95 for kids aged 2–12.

So if you're looking for a local escape that's both educational and Instagram-worthy, this might be your next weekend stop.
