Mayor Leslie

🏛️ Mayor Leslie Hosts Community Conversation

Ormond Beach residents, mark your calendars: a civic-minded evening is just around the corner. On Wednesday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m., the Citizens for Ormond Beach will host a Community Town Hall Event at the Ormond Beach Regional Library. The spotlight will be on Mayor Jason Leslie, who’s set to deliver key updates and insights on the city’s ongoing projects and initiatives.

With so much happening in the area, from infrastructure improvements to community development efforts, Mayor Leslie’s address will cover the topics that matter most to locals. Even better, the evening includes an open Q&A session, giving residents the chance to bring their questions, concerns, and ideas directly to city leadership.

Whether you're passionate about parks, zoning, traffic, or the city’s future growth, this is your opportunity to have a voice in the conversation. The event is free and open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to come curious and leave informed.

🛫 Civil Air Patrol Opens New Cadet Training Facility

It was a big weekend for the Ormond Beach Composite Squadron as they cut the ribbon on their brand-new Aerospace Education Center—a dedicated learning hub for young cadets. Housed in a modular classroom beside the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport, this upgraded facility marks a huge leap forward from the squadron's original 1970s hangar setup.

The new space offers cadets more room to grow and train, while the refurbished original building will now serve senior CAP members and support air operations meetings. The effort was made possible through community support, including help from the city, donors, and volunteers. The center honors the legacy of the late William Brown, a veteran and professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Lt. Col. Joseph Wisnieski emphasized the squadron's success in preparing cadets for prestigious military academies, noting that even with limited resources, they've produced impressive results. With better facilities now in place, the sky is literally the limit.

💉 School Vaccine Rules Still Stand in Florida

Despite a swirl of political debate around vaccine mandates, Florida schools still require immunizations—at least for now. At a press conference earlier this month, Gov. Ron DeSantis and State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo announced plans to phase out vaccine mandates in the state. But for this school year, nothing has changed.

Parents should ensure their children are up to date on required vaccines, including MMR, DTaP, Hep B, Polio, and Varicella, with a Tdap booster needed for seventh graders. Proof of vaccination must be documented using Form DH 680, and exemptions are available for medical or religious reasons with proper documentation.

With national vaccination rates for children dipping and exemption requests rising, Florida’s stance could reshape public health norms. But for now, parents in Volusia County should check with local health offices to stay compliant and avoid school entry issues.

🌧️ Rain, Flood Warnings Hit Volusia Hard This Week

If you live in Volusia County, consider your umbrella your new best friend. The National Weather Service forecasts steady rain and storms through mid-week, driven by a lingering front and high atmospheric moisture. Flood warnings are already in effect for the St. Johns River near Astor, which recently reached minor flood stage.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and avoid driving through flooded roads. Coastal areas, especially in Flagler County, are also under high rip current and flood advisories during high tides. The weather pattern is expected to keep daytime highs in the low to mid-80s, with multiple rounds of showers likely.

Meanwhile, the Atlantic hurricane season is hitting its peak, though three tropical waves currently being tracked show limited development potential for now, thanks to dry air and wind shear. But with the season's busiest stretch running through mid-October, it's worth keeping an eye on the tropics.
