🧬 Stitching the Past Together: Genealogy Events with HGS
Curious about where you come from? Ready to uncover the stories hidden in your family tree? The Halifax Genealogical Society (HGS) invites you to a pair of engaging genealogy events this September at the Ormond Beach Library—perfect for both seasoned researchers and total beginners.
First up is a special presentation titled "Weaving a Tapestry: Genealogy and Family History" by longtime HGS member Linda Vivian. Join us on Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Library Auditorium. Linda will explore the difference between genealogy and family history, why this work is meaningful, and how to start (or restart) your own journey.
With credentials including a Master’s in Education, advanced genealogical coursework, six published books, and a feature in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Linda brings deep knowledge and passion to the subject. She's also served in various leadership roles with HGS and the NSDAR’s James Ormond Chapter.
But it doesn’t end there.
Just two days later, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., join HGS volunteers for a free one-on-one research assistance session in Meeting Room 3 of the Ormond Beach Library. Learn how to make the most of the library’s genealogical databases, get expert advice, and maybe even break through a brick wall in your research.
Whether you're diving in for the first time or dusting off old notes, both events offer tools and support to help you dig deeper into your roots.

✊ Protestors Rally in Support of Riverbend Survivors
On September 7, protestors gathered outside Riverbend Community Church in Ormond Beach to show solidarity with women who have accused church leaders of sexual and psychological abuse—allegations dating back nearly two decades. The demonstration, held along Old Tomoka Farm Road, also challenged the church and Riverbend Academy’s teachings on women and children.
The protest followed the August 18 police investigation into Riverbend after a tip raised concerns about past abuse. An anonymous letter published on Substack soon after detailed disturbing survey results: 66.7% of women in the church community said they were discouraged from higher education, and 77.8% reported feeling inferior to men.
Local business owner Patricia Redman, joined by her daughters, spoke passionately: “No person’s value is found in a man… Men should learn how to stand up and be protective and not suppress women and children… That’s actually abuse.”
One worship leader has since been removed. Pastor Josh Brown has pledged a third-party evaluation of the allegations.

🏥 Palm Coast “Fake Nurse” Faces Fewer Charges
In Palm Coast, the case of Autumn Bardisa, accused of posing as a licensed nurse and treating more than 4,400 patients, has taken a surprising turn. Initially arrested on 14 felony charges in August, prosecutors formally filed just two counts on August 22: one for unlicensed medical practice and one for fraudulent use of personal identification.
Both charges carry up to five years in prison, with the unlicensed practice count including a mandatory one-year minimum sentence. Bardisa’s attorney entered a plea of not guilty, and a hearing is scheduled for October 22.
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly, who previously believed Bardisa would face the full 14 charges, acknowledged that the final decision rests with prosecutors. AdventHealth administrators fired Bardisa in January after a colleague discovered she had used another woman’s nursing license.
Despite the reduced charges, the case has raised concerns over hiring safeguards, as Bardisa worked at AdventHealth Palm Coast from 2023 until her termination in early 2025.
