Remembering September 11, 2001-A Day of Honor and Reflection
September 11, 2001, remains one of the most profoundly tragic days in American history. On that clear September morning, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost in a coordinated series of terrorist attacks that struck the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and aboard Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania after brave passengers intervened.
We remember not only the civilians who were going about their daily lives, but also the selfless first responders—firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and countless others—who ran toward danger in a courageous effort to save lives. Many gave their lives that day, and many more have since suffered lasting health effects as a result of their heroism.
As we mark another year since that fateful day, we honor the memory of those lost and reflect on the resilience and unity that followed. Their stories, their bravery, and their legacy live on in our national consciousness.
Let us continue to remember, to teach future generations, and to find strength in community, compassion, and the unwavering spirit that defines us. We will never forget.
💰 School Budget Gets a Boost—But Not Everyone's On Board
Volusia County Schools has officially approved a $1.4 billion budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, a significant jump from the earlier $1.1 billion estimate. The increase, triggered by a late adjustment from the Florida Department of Education, left some board members uneasy—especially Donna Brosemer, who cast the lone dissenting vote.
Brosemer voiced concerns over the steep rise in spending, noting that while student enrollment numbers remain similar to a decade ago, the budget has ballooned by nearly 75%. She also questioned why 71.5% of the operating budget is dedicated to salaries and benefits.
Chief Financial Officer Todd Seis attributed the jump largely to increases in capital projects and salaries—teacher starting pay has risen from $39,200 to $49,201 in just seven years. Board Chair Jamie Haynes pointed out that public perception often overlooks how much of the budget is already earmarked for non-negotiables like debt service, federal programs, and charter school pass-throughs.
Despite the concerns, the budget passed 4-1, with several board members praising the finance department for navigating complex changes in state funding while maintaining transparency.

🌸 'Not a Florist, a Vibe': The Flower Bar Blooms Downtown
Downtown Ormond Beach just got a whole lot more vibrant thanks to the grand opening of The Flower Bar at 157 W. Granada Blvd. The brainchild of longtime wedding planner Yvonne McCutchen, the boutique florist and luxury goods shop is on a mission to be your "flower bestie."
After 22 years in the wedding industry, McCutchen swapped "I do" for "let's bloom" and brought her unique blend of fresh flowers and luxury items (yes, you can buy Louis Vuitton and roses in one trip) to a stylish storefront in the heart of downtown. What started as a cheeky dream about running a flower cart turned into a full-fledged floral lifestyle destination.
Offerings include grab-and-go blooms, a build-your-own bouquet station with weekly themes, a flower subscription service, and community workshops. McCutchen also partners with local nonprofits, donating florals to organizations like United Way and Make-A-Wish.
Hours:
Tuesday–Friday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

🚀 Boeing Lands in Daytona with Major Engineering Center
Boeing just gave Volusia County a serious economic lift with the opening of a 65,000-square-foot engineering center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Research Park in Daytona Beach.
This new facility will support high-tech defense, space, and security programs while deepening Boeing’s collaboration with Embry-Riddle. It’s also expected to bring around 400 high-paying engineering jobs to the region.
“This day represents an important milestone,” said Dan Gillian, Boeing’s VP and GM of Air Dominance. And it’s not just about business: Boeing is investing $100,000 into new STEM programs for the Boys & Girls Club of Volusia/Flagler counties and supporting Second Harvest Food Bank.
The center is part of the university’s push to turn its research park into an innovation hub. Since its inception, the park has already generated over $327 million in economic impact and nearly 2,000 jobs.
Aerospace innovation is clearly on the rise in Volusia—and with Boeing on board, the sky’s not even the limit.
