🌮 Farewell Frida’s: Ormond Favorite Closes After Five Years
Frida’s Mexican Kitchen & Cantina has closed its doors in downtown Ormond Beach. The beloved local restaurant, located at 195 W. Granada Blvd., made the announcement via Facebook, citing the decision as bittersweet but necessary as they prepare to expand into new markets in Orlando and South Florida.
“We believe it is the right step forward,” their heartfelt post read, thanking the community for five years of unwavering support. Though this closure marks the end of an era for downtown Ormond, the Frida’s team is optimistic about the future and promises, “This isn’t goodbye, just see you later.”
So if you’re already missing your go-to tacos and margaritas, take heart—Frida’s may soon pop up in a new city near you.

🚨 Update- Circle K Employee Charged in Officer’s Death
Details have emerged surrounding the fatal shooting of Officer David Jewell, with 24-year-old Circle K employee Eduardo Machado now charged with first-degree murder. According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Machado confessed to the shooting, claiming he recognized Jewell from a past disagreement and felt threatened by his presence.
Machado, who legally resides in the U.S. and has no significant criminal history, reportedly suffered from a mental health disorder and was hearing voices, according to his family. He had purchased a handgun prior to the shooting and used it to fire multiple rounds at Jewell at close range.
As the investigation continues, support services are being provided to Jewell’s colleagues, and many in the community are struggling to process the senseless act. Flowers and tributes have been left in Jewell’s honor, reflecting the shock and sorrow felt by residents and officials alike.

🕊️ A Community Mourns: Officer David Jewell Remembered
Edgewater and the wider Volusia County community are reeling from the shocking loss of Officer David Jewell, who was fatally shot while off duty at a Circle K in Ormond-By-The-Sea on Sept. 15. Jewell, described by colleagues as having a “heart of gold,” was remembered with flowers, wreaths, and touching tributes as his patrol car stood outside the Edgewater Police Department.
The department has launched a GoFundMe to support his wife, son, and father-in-law—Jewell was their sole provider. “He was kind, selfless, and always there to serve others before himself,” wrote Sgt. Sarah Geiger, who is organizing both the fundraiser and a Meal Train effort for the family. The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of stories and memories from community members, reflecting just how deeply Jewell impacted those around him.
As his family and fellow officers navigate this grief, the community continues to rally around them with heartfelt support.
