🚌 A Half-Century on the Road: Votran Turns 50

Volusia County recently celebrated a golden milestone: 50 years of service from its public transit system, Votran. At the center of the celebration? Bernard Huggins, the very first — and still active — bus driver hired when Votran launched back in 1975.

The anniversary bash at Votran’s South Daytona headquarters honored Huggins' remarkable career and his recent recognition as Driver of the Year by the Florida Public Transportation Association. A new Votran bus featuring the updated logo and Huggins’ photo was unveiled in his honor.

“I’m grateful to the passengers… and my coworkers who have been with me through these 50 years,” Huggins shared in a heartfelt statement, noting his work is about more than routes — it's about people, service, and community.

As part of the celebration, Votran announced a system-wide modernization: think expanded on-demand options, an improved mobile app, and online booking tools. With this future-focused shift, Votran is looking to keep its wheels — and mission — turning for decades to come.

👩‍💼 Say Yes: Nancy Lohman Kicks Off Boss Lady Conference

Leadership, inspiration, and a healthy dose of hustle were the themes at this year’s Boss Lady Women’s Leadership Conference in Daytona Beach, kicked off by none other than community leader Nancy Lohman. Her keynote address set an empowering tone for the three-day event, encouraging attendees to seize opportunity and stick to their plans.

“All of us have created a plan and now we are working that plan,” Lohman told the enthusiastic crowd of over 100 businesswomen from across Central Florida. Her keynote wasn’t just motivational — it was practical, packed with real-life wisdom from her own journey in business and philanthropy.

Hosted by the Boss Lady Ladder Network and co-founded by Teresa Rand and Jennifer Roberts, the annual conference offers a robust lineup of speakers, networking sessions, and professional development opportunities, all aimed at helping women lead with confidence and clarity.

🐾 Bobcat on the Block? FWC Issues Safety Tips

Spotted twice in a single week near the Ponce Inlet Fire Department, a local bobcat is reminding Volusia County residents that we do, in fact, share our space with Florida’s native wildlife.

While bobcat attacks are rare, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is playing it safe, offering a few key tips to ensure human-bobcat interactions stay peaceful. Their advice? Don’t approach, back away slowly, and keep pets and kids close.

The sightings have sparked curiosity (and a few raised eyebrows), but experts say these creatures usually keep to themselves. If you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse — from a safe distance — just remember: you're in their neighborhood, too.
