🏊 Dive Into Duty: Lifeguard Workshops Prepare Recruits for the Waves
Volusia County Beach Safety is diving into action this October with a trio of free swim workshops designed to help future lifeguards hit the ground swimming. These sessions — scheduled for Oct. 2, 9, and 16 at Daytona State College’s Aquatic Center — aim to help candidates build the endurance and speed needed to make the cut for the Fall Lifeguard Recruit Class.
Open to anyone 16 or older by April 2026, the workshops will guide swimmers through rigorous tryout benchmarks, like swimming 500 meters in under 10 minutes and sprinting 50 yards in 30 seconds or less. There's also a half-mile run to conquer — in under 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
Although participation in the workshops isn’t mandatory, it’s strongly encouraged for anyone hoping to ace the tryouts, which kick off Oct. 25 and Oct. 28 at local YMCAs. More tryout dates are on the way in November.

🦆 Quack for a Cause: Elks' Duck Drop Brings Joy and Generosity
Ormond Beach turned into a ducky spectacle on Sept. 20 as over 2,300 rubber ducks rained from a helicopter in the third annual Duck Drop fundraiser hosted by the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge 2193. The sky-high spectacle drew crowds, laughs, and donations — all in the name of charity.
From five-dollar duck purchases to DJ tunes and Philly cheesesteaks grilled on-site, the event was equal parts fundraiser and community festival. Prizes included cash awards and a seaplane ride, while proceeds supported causes like youth camps, therapy services, and homeless veterans through Elks programs.
Girl Scouts, city officials, and longtime volunteers added to the lively atmosphere with games, raffles, and more. Lodge leaders also used the occasion as a membership drive to show that the Elks are about much more than bingo nights.
With its perfect blend of fun and philanthropy, the Duck Drop proves that even plastic poultry can make a meaningful impact.

🎳 Strikes of Support - Nonprofit Backs Domestic Abuse Council
In a meaningful show of community solidarity, the Cultural Awareness Fund of Ormond Beach recently donated $500 to the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County. The funds were raised during the group’s Bowl-A-Thon on Aug. 30, hosted at Back Alley Lanes VR-Cade in South Daytona.
With support from local leaders and business figures — including Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood — the event highlighted how small strikes can lead to big wins. The donation aims to bolster emergency shelter and critical support services for survivors of domestic violence.
In other good news, the nonprofit welcomed attorney Lloyd Bowers to its board. A longtime advocate for the arts, Bowers brings decades of legal and philanthropic experience, including founding a Mardi Gras ball that funds arts education in local schools.
As Executive Director William Sanchez put it, “No survivor should face violence alone.” And thanks to community-led initiatives like this, more families will find safety, hope, and healing.
