🔬 Powering Teachers, Powering Futures
Florida Power & Light (FPL) is shining a light on STEM education with a nearly $8,000 grant awarded to the FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools. The EmPOWERing STEM Educators grant will fund advanced professional development for teachers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
FUTURES Foundation Executive Director Shimene Shepard noted the impact goes beyond the classroom: “When teachers feel valued and are given meaningful opportunities to collaborate and innovate, it not only improves instruction — it helps us retain great teachers.”
The funding is part of FPL’s broader mission to power strong communities through education. The utility has invested over $600,000 in STEM educator initiatives since 2018 and continues to support classrooms with makeover grants worth $50,000 for tech upgrades — applications open September 30 at FPL.com/Education.
This is more than just financial support; it’s a spark for future scientists and problem-solvers across Volusia County.

👶 Baby Steps, Big Vision
Born from a growing need for prenatal care, Baby Steps — a nonprofit clinic launched by Dr. Pamela Carbiener — just secured a $50,000 seed endowment in partnership with the United Way and Community Foundation of Volusia-Flagler Counties. The goal? A $6 million fund by 2030 that could sustainably generate $250,000 annually for clinic operations.
Baby Steps has already served nearly 250 women since April, offering early prenatal care to a population that too often falls through the cracks due to Medicaid delays or lack of insurance. Florida's shrinking pool of practicing OBGYNs, especially in Volusia and Flagler counties, has made the clinic's mission all the more urgent.
In addition to medical care, the clinic connects women to housing, mental health services, and addiction recovery programs — empowering them to become successful mothers and prevent family separation.
Dr. Carbiener sums it up best: “They’re supposed to feel respected, safe and empowered to take the best care they can of themselves and their babies.”

🌧️ Rising Waters, Rising Tensions
Almost 200 residents packed the Port Orange library this week, anxious to address a crisis that hits too close to home — recurrent flooding. Organized by Volusia County Chair Jeff Brower, the town hall saw frustrated homeowners from neighborhoods like Sleepy Hollow sharing stories of water creeping ever closer to their living rooms.
“I hold my breath every time it rains,” said resident Kandi Hall, who’s seen water reach her back patio. Many attendees pointed fingers at unchecked development, which they say is making the flooding worse. Brower didn’t shy away, noting, “You can follow the water from developments to flooded homes.”
Residents also voiced frustration about slow-moving solutions and the limitations imposed by state law SB 180, which restricts local governments from enacting stricter stormwater controls. While a $21.8 million drainage project is in the works for Sleepy Hollow, it’s still in the planning stages.
As storms grow more intense, the community’s message is clear: they need more than promises — they need action.
