🌧️ Imelda Skips the Watch, but Not the Weather
Volusia County may be off the Tropical Storm Watch list, but the effects of Tropical Storm Imelda are still rolling in. The good news? No direct hit. The less-good news? Coastal residents can still expect rain, wind, and some serious surf. Rainfall along the coast is forecast at 1–3 inches, with localized bursts up to 4 inches. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, though most areas will see breezes between 20–30 mph.
Marine conditions are where it really gets dicey. Surf breakers of up to 9 feet and offshore waves peaking at 17 feet are creating a high risk of dangerous rip currents. Beach erosion and standing water on roads are also concerns. Officials are urging folks to secure loose items, stay off the roads during heavy rain, and—for the love of safety—out of the ocean.
While the county is no longer under a watch, emergency officials remind everyone to stay updated via official Volusia County channels and apps.

🌀 Dodging Storms: Why Florida Keeps Getting Lucky
As Imelda slides eastward, Florida adds another near-miss to its 2025 hurricane season. It’s been a strange year for storm trackers: multiple systems—like Humberto, Gabrielle, and Erin—have developed and curved away, leaving the Sunshine State wet but mostly untouched. So what gives?
Blame it on atmospheric science. Early season tropical waves were pushed south by a stubborn North Atlantic high. Saharan dust and wind shear helped keep storms weak or pushed them away. Imelda’s trajectory, for instance, was influenced by something called the Fujiwhara effect—essentially a stormy dance with nearby systems that tugged it eastward.
Historically speaking, this isn’t unheard of. Between 2005 and 2015, Florida went 10 years without a single hurricane landfall, the longest stretch since hurricane data started being recorded in 1851. Tropical storms still visited, but major damage was largely avoided. And while Imelda still brings rough weather and beach hazards, so far 2025 has been kinder than expected.
Just don’t get too comfortable—the season isn’t over yet.
