🎣 New Grant Brings Big Upgrade to Tomoka State Park Pier

Reel good news for parkgoers: The Marina Fishing Pier at Tomoka State Park is set for a much-needed upgrade, thanks to a $33,572 grant from the Daytona Beach Racing and Recreation District.

The pier was damaged by hurricanes and has been out of commission, but not for long. The Friends of Tomoka Basin State Parks, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing local parks, secured the funding to bring it back to life. Group president Gordon Whitley called it a “meaningful milestone” for improving the visitor experience.

The grant is part of a broader effort by the Racing and Rec District to boost recreation in the area, having invested over $19 million into facilities across Volusia County. Tomoka’s pier restoration is just one more win for the region’s nature lovers and weekend anglers.

🗳️ Melissa Burt DeVriese Enters Ormond Beach Zone 1 Race

A familiar face in local business is eyeing a new role in city government. Melissa Burt DeVriese, president of Security First Insurance, has filed to run for Ormond Beach City Commission’s Zone 1 seat, currently open as incumbent Lori Tolland pursues the mayor’s office.

DeVriese, a lifelong Ormond Beach resident and licensed attorney, brings a résumé packed with community service. From lifeguarding on Volusia beaches to leading Easterseals Florida, she’s been deeply embedded in the local fabric. Now, she says she’s ready to help shape Ormond's future.

Her platform includes supporting job growth through economic development, investing in cultural and recreational amenities, and maintaining high-quality city services — all while balancing the budget.

“I want to make sure Ormond stays a safe and vibrant place to live and work,” she said. She joins registered nurse Coleen McMahon in the race for the Zone 1 seat.

🌊 Coastal Flood Watch Continues as Fall Temps Arrive

Fall may be rolling in, but coastal flooding is still hanging around.

While Central Florida enjoys cooler mornings in the 60s and pleasant afternoons in the 80s, high tides and persistent onshore winds are raising water levels along the coast. The National Weather Service has extended a coastal flood advisory through Sunday, warning of possible saltwater flooding during high tides.

Low-lying areas could see water levels reach 2 to 3 feet above normally dry ground — not from rain, but from the tides themselves. The St. Johns River is also swelling, especially around Astor, where floodwaters are expected to crest at moderate levels through much of next week.

So, while the weather may feel more like autumn, it’s not quite time to forget about flood risks.
